4 cylinder Xterra

Anyone out there actually have a 4 cylinder Xterra and happy with it?
I've been thinking of getting one and have test driven once just around the block because of time restraints but didn't think it was too bad.
Soon I will actually get one on the interstate and see what it does.

Is there anyone who can advise one way or the other who actually has a 4 cylinder?

Thanks,
Jamie

I have the 6-cylinder Xterra and a 4-cylinder Frontier which has the same engine as the 4-cylinder Xterra.

The power difference is quite noticeable, but then again, so is the gas mileage.

The other day I saw that you can get the base 4-cylinder Xterra for around 16K! I'd say it is a great deal at that price.

Test drive the 4-cylinder before you buy so you know what to expect powerwise.

If you live at low elevations, don't offroad, and just want to commute, then it's probably fine, especially if you want a 2wd (and that should be really cheap). But resale value will be low, and keep in mind the 6-cylinder people are constantly complaining about the lack of power from their engines. The Xterra isn't exactly light.

Even if I didn't offroad I would never buy a I4(4 cylinder) with 4wd (if it even exists anymore) because nobody will ever buy it from you. Dealers will do anything to offload a I4 on you so you so make sure you haggle them down.

Find a nice long hill and see if you still like it.

The 4-cylinder has always been 2WD only.

I have a 2003 4 cylinder 5-speed. It's not bad. Don't expect too much with power; but the tradeoff is better gas mileage than the Xterra v6. While driving from Dallas to Houston and back, it averages about 3300 RPMs doing 70mph, getting me about 20/21 mpg on the highway. The cruise does well at high speeds, keeping fairly consitent speeds even going uphills. My city driving gets me about 18/19 mpg. If you don't mind a manual transmission and are not a power freak, the 4 cylinder should be sufficient.

Weak power! I test drove a 6 cylinder and was very disapointed with the power as it was. I had the pedal floored trying to build up enough power to barely enter the highway in time. The new model will have much more power and a little more space. (I sat in the back and was very crammed)
