I know everyone uses tamiya polishing compound, but that stuff is expensive and rare to find here.
What other products can I use to do this with?

Go to an auto store and ask for paint polish or scratch remover. 3M makes a good one...

If you're using lacquers, go to wal-mart and look for "Kit Scratch Out" in a yellow bottle. It's about 3 bucks and works great. Use it in the typical polishing fashion, but rub fast with mild pressure until you hear it squeak. That seems to give a good shine and depth.
