Just curious what others think about the recent population explosion here at AF.

I still love the site, but it seems like there are more and more...uh...well...less interesting things being posted here daily. While the "old timers" who got me hooked on this site have been reduced to moderators with little time to keep us informed of their own projects.

Ah hell it's late, I'm tired and I thought I'd add another useless post the lot...now how do I make this damn poll work?!?! Maybe I should start a thread and ask EVERYBODY how polls work...no I'll just SEARCH FOR THE DAMN ANSWER MYSELF!

Guess what I found it right HERE! (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/misc.php?s=&action=faq&page=3#polls)

Just to let you all know I'm off to bed now, so I won't see the early voting.

But, I'll be up bright and early to see the results tomorrow! :bloated:

Actually I was suggesting we have a forum where only pics of Projects threads are allowed or progressive or done projects. And the rest in another forum.

Seeing as how fast this forum moves, its hard to keep up with so many 'turnover rates' these days. Coming from someone like me who works and has a family. Or even for someone who doesnt surf here often, you'll find that you have missed out alot.

It will help cut down on the searching time and reply time too.
For instance, on some days you may just wanna see what projects are being done or keep up to date of the other members projects only.

Anyways, of course the more the merrier but depending on how you see it.
The more the merrier as in more Projects, more ideas coming in or just plain posts and feedbacks?

Just my 2cts.

Definatly the more the merrier. More models completed, more people to talk to ... and as chain siad earlier, more ideas as well. I would'nt mind if there were alot of people on the forum, as long as the new people follow the rules... this place is a happy place (like it's always been). :)

I have to go along with the previous responses. The more members who post here the better it is for those of us who come looking for inspiration, tips, advice and new ideas.

The idea of having a seperate forum/section for picture based threads, ie progress or finished model threads could be good if it is workable.

IMHO as long as the forum is used and not abused, I can only see that the more members and interest in the hobby, the better for all of us.

I have to say I was a little tired and frustrated when I started this post last night. This site is a great source for tech reference and inspiration when building models. However over the last few months it has IMO become very cluttered almost to the point of missuse (not so much abuse)...let me explain.

When I first came to this site it was full of build up threads and very insightful tips. Honestly there only seemed to be about 20 members that posted regularly (I was not one of them) and most build up threads managed to stay on the front page until they were "completed".

Now a thread gets bumped into oblivion in a matter of hours, with the forum full of posts that IMO are darn near useless. It has almost become a social forum, with models as a sideline.

I will not slam newbies or "youngsters", because I think neither of those groups are the single source of the overcrowding. We (AF) have become very popular for a reason....we all love models and want to be around others that also love them. There are some great things going on here, like the FAQ, tutorial threads and project build ups. However the constant posting for the sake of posting is KILLING me.

Perhaps the forum could be split into different categorys, like some of the 1:1 areas on this site have been. Maybe with a different section for build ups, tech reference and a den/pit for EVERYTHING else.

For those who don't know me....I don't post often, been registered for over a year and have <70 posts, I try like hell to find the answers to my questions before I stop to ask someone else (typical male?!?) and I never try to slam/flame anyone.

I guess this post is a CRY for help.

SAVE MY SITE (well our site, but you know what I mean....right?!?)

Sorry to ramble....must be the coffee.

Well I do agree with you.
To add to somemore and hopefully make it tactful on my side, some posts (you can include mine :D) are neither here nor there.

But if we take a good hard look, neither 1 of us can be blame becos most of the threads if not all are somewhat model related.

If all forums were to be topic specific then there would be too many forum categories and I am sure this is not gonna be very easy for AF management or moderators to so call 'govern'.

What I would specifically suggest is to only segregate the PROJECTS or PROGRESSIVE build-ups. The rest can still stay or create 1 more forum for the above.
That way, anything that is not in its building process will stay in this forum and anyone who wants to post his projects can post it in the PROJECTS forum.

I know there are search functions but at times when your internet connection is slow and you got too many things to do, you just gotta give up and read another day. Ah but next day you log in and there are so many more threads again.

As I said and I hope I made myself clear, I am not pointing any fingers to anyone, if that is so, then I too should be guilty :D

Well, just my 2cts+2cts.

Definately the more the merrier as long as everyone is considerate and don't anyhow start arguements etc...

I kinda agree, there are much useless posts around here, that don't belong here.

For example , I hate it when somebody is saying "I am going to do this and this and this to my (insert model here), what do you think of it
And what colour do you think I should do my (insert model here) in ?
Also a lot of stupid questions that have been answered in the past are floating around here "how to use compound ..."

I would also like to have some kind of more or less sticky-progress threads, they should stay more on the forefront of the board, not vanish.

Well, It's just to say that you're wasting a lot of modeling and free time searching through all these garbage threads.

Well, here's the thread from the last time we suggested subforums:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85741

At that time, most of our users seemed to be against it...

I guess that thread is a perfect example of how overcrowded it is here....because I completely missed it. Don't get me wrong, but if most of the users here are against a little "organizing" of the forum, they obviously have used too much toxic glue.

i like and support the idea of sub forums.

I think lately a lot of posts have been wastes, this is not on of them, but re posting pics of a car you built 6 months ago, when uve had 4-5 threads about it in the past, is stupid, A lot of the newbies lately seem to be pretty good at modeling, when i joined, and shortly after , there was a new thread every week about the same thing, now it seems a lot of the newbies do read the FAQ! which can solve most problems on here

I think the forum has got better. There does not seem to be the same questions getting repeated as people must be reading the FAQ.

IMO the more the better....there is so many good builders on here at the moment we can only learn and get better

I agree we have many skilled modelers here....but it is the constant posting of "Look what happens when I use a can of hairspray and a lighter to put flames on my models!" or "Look I built this model in 6 hours, don't mind the fingerprints in the paint, cause I like em!" type threads that are driving me insane. It wouldn't be so bad if it were one or two a week, but there seem to be 10-20 of them a day.

I honestly miss the days of watching YOUR model projects come together and I have several of your threads (and hundreds of other pics) saved so I will have accurate reference when I build those kits.

The knowledge gained here is beyond value and I hate to see it cluttered by this other senseless crap. A little realignment of the forum should help sort things out a bit.

Maybe I'm just being selfish....

You have a valid point, but it could be much worse! There are other modeling forums I view that get cluttered with weather reports, obituary and "My daughter won the county spelling bee" type stuff, constantly. That is going to happen on any forum, but I'd say overall it stays fairly on track here, and what doesn't comes down to inexperience. :)
