Cavalier died and wont restart

A family member of mine has a 97 cavalier with the 2.2 in it. it died while she was driving and wont restart. we are suspecting its the timing chain. would there still be spark if the timing chain snapped?

it does have spark but I dont think it would have spark if the timing chain snapped would it?

Yeah, it might be possible, the rpm signal comes from the crankshaft position sensor, which reacts to the crankshaft, not the camshaft,but, hey, I've been wrong before. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Some of the name brand autostores used to loan out a fuel pressure gage, if you don't have one. If the oil fill cap is in the valve cover, remove it, crank engine, shine a lite in there, see if valve train is moving. I'm not sure that is possible on your vehicle, I have done it on others. If the valve train is moving, the chain isn't broke. You could also look for a camshaft position sensor signal, where applicable. Check for applicable trouble codes, at the least, you need an obd2 code reader.
