which is the better camera, or shall i say, better for taking detailed pics of models and still good overall pics?

I'm no camera expert but out of the two, the Sony one seems to have a better spec. If close ups of your models is your main priority the the Macro function is your concern, sony claim to acheive 4cm with that which is very good. I have a Fujifilm 2800zoom, same as Pman's, which has a 10cm macro range.

Having said that, i've always been led to believe that Sony cameras are not so great and that they should stick to making walkmans. You might want to check out some Canon, Nikon or Fuji models.

My Kodak Camera only gives good pictures outside. Inside its kind of fuzzy

Agree. I've been working in a photoshop for about 3 years part-time
and if it's close up shots (macro) you're looking for then go for a Nikon, they have the best lens for that purpose. And in general they make a good digital. As well as Canon, Olympus and Fuji.
But if you're limited to those two choices then go with the Sony.
IMO Kodak shouldn't even be making film...

Sony DSC-85

Just like the S75 the S85's macro mode is enabled by pressing the dedicated button on the rear of the camera (the right arrow on the 4-way direction pad). Macro focus ability is fairly good, not in the ranks of the Coolpix 990/995 but respectable all the same. We found the optimum frame coverage at about half zoom where you can expect 4.5 cm (1.8 in) across the frame.



Kodak


The DX4900's optimum zoom position when using macro mode was full wide angle. Typically wide angle macro's lead to barrel distortion, but luckily Kodak have that under control. However, one thing which can't be avoided when shooting so close at wide angle are soft edges which can be seen if you take a closer look at the ruler shot below. Best horizontal frame coverage was 84 mm (3.3 in).



Both seem to have pretty good macro, the Kodak being somewhat vague. The Sony received better scores all around, I'd say go with the Sony.

Kodac don't make really good digital camera :rolleyes: good for outside, inside they got bug problem unless you'r going in the pro series at over 1000$.

The sony is kinda nice, but it's sony.. that mean you need memory stick and they are very expensive. Compact Flash card are near 2 time cheaper.

My recomandation: get a Nikon Coolpix 9xx. a 950 can be found at about 250$ I think.. (I bouth it last year at 500$Canadian) This is What I have and it's a professional camera. if you want to read the big manual, you can control everything and make awersome picture.. other model are 990 995 and the new one is 9500 I think.. not sure. Coolpix are probably the best out there

anyway, keep in mind, a Camera need battery, and small Alcalin AA will last less than 10 minutes with those battery monster. so consider to buy about 60$ of NIMH Battery (4 or 8) 1500 mha or better (I have 4 1500 and 8 1800)

Stay away from Kodak cameras. Their 35mm film is great, though.

my kodak works GREAT! 4320 model. it was 200$, and it wokrs fine for me

well ive decied to look into some other cameras like he Nikon Coolpix 4500, and the Canon Powershot G3

keep in mind i want a camera that can take good detailed pics of models, as well as normal family/car pics, any other sugestions are welcome, but i dont have a big budget

Definitely the Nikon

Macro Focus
As we've come to expect of Nikon's split bodied Coolpix range the 4500's macro capabilities go way beyond any other prosumer digital camera. Engage macro mode and zoom into the macro 'sweet spot' at about half zoom (indicated by the macro icon turning yellow). You can now focus as close as 1 cm from the subject and that produces an amazing frame coverage of just 17 mm (2/3 in). Better still because you're at half zoom you'll get no distortion and very little corner softness. Absolutely superb.



If the G3 is cheaper, that could work to. You could just buy a macro lense for it.

I own the Sony DSC-S85. I've taken over 4,000 pictures with it now.
I will let the pictures do the talking, as they say, pictures are worth a thousand words.

You should state a budget. It makes it easier to cut down from a very wide range for you to choose one.

Another way is to do a little research here on this forum.

Try to find a member who has posted up good macro pics and PM him/her to inquire what model he/she is using.

I'd say go with the Nikon - I looked into the Nikon before buying my Fuji. I'm with the others on the Kodak. Sony is so-so.

Always look on firm who are experts in making photo equipment.
My recomendation is Nikon, Olympus or Canon.
I have Olympus and it very good.

i just got my digi camera. i got the sony cybershot p31.. and i love it.. for 200$ there aint a darn thing that i can complain about, it takes good pics in and outside. the only bad thing is that it dont have a macro mode but it still takes real good pics of things up close. jason
