I really really wanted a car

I really really wanted a car for a while but right now i seem to be completely disinterested in everything

If you look at certain religions they seek to gain peace which means that they have to give up material posessions and all disires. I tend to think that this seems to be the driving force of todays society.

Does anyone thing that society has become too materialistic and that this will be eventually the down fall of civilisation as greed conquers each and every individual and those that do have it are dispised by those who don't have it. :o

it being the inevitable materialism.

Don't you think its human nature to be materialistic and want certain things.

But if you think about it attaining wealth and power is very natural in that birds build nests to attract mates and some males with show off their looks to attract females. IE the females will think they are the most likely to give them offspring.

discuss

I'm just thinking aloud sortof

I think that there will always be enough people like me, who drive $100 Yugos, and use 20 year old computers as word processors and don't really care about what's "in" or "hip" to keep yuppies from completely taking over the earth and making life a meaningless race to own the most.
There will be people who want to give and ask nothing in return if they don't need it (and sometimes even if they do) to keep the world from becomming a soul-less cess-pool of humanity.

People who have lots of things may not be materialistic. I see nothing wrong with seeing something you like and working at getting it. Be that an extra mile on a run, upgrading the bouquet of flowers for the wife from dasies to roses, buying a car you can enjoy driving or just buying a book to read.

While some people do want things just becaue it is "in" I think there are a large number of unsung people who get things because they are just plain fun to have. Whats really important is that you do not feel upset by the things you do get or by the things that you do not have. I think materialism isn't owning - its the wanting of things you have no intention of working at getting or doing.

No matter how much you have, you'll always want something that's better or newer. While I'm very happy and greatful for everything I have(my truck for instance), I want a new one even though it's only about 4 years old. I think its the way people think today. I think it's okay to want something new, i consider it dreaming.

I don't know, I don't have too much and as of right now I'm content. This doesn't mean that I'll never want something newer or "better" (you learn new doesn't usually mean better pretty fast) it just means that for right now I'm happy with what I've got. I don't want the newest, or the fastest, or the best looking, I'm not the guy who wants to have the "latest on the block" Some people don't take time to stop and smell the roses, they don't understand what is so great about a small, slow car like the Subaru 360, or what's fun about using Select on a 1983 Kaypro II, or that it's perfectly O.K. to let the rest of the world rush headlong into the latest fad and to sit back and just watch them do it instead of actually joining in.
Not to keep you from going for what you want, I went for what I wanted I got it, and now I'm happy, it's not owning a Subaru 360 or a Yugo that makes me happy, it's driving them that makes me happy. People can take a look and say "I haven't seen a 360 in 20 years" or crack an old Yugo joke that just sprang up from their memory when they saw the car.:)

I wrecked the 'Bring!!!

But life goes on, I just now have no money so materialistic items are out of the question since now I'm paying for something to be junked and higher insurance incase it happens again.

You must also define materialistic. Items, that one can be are the obvious materials gained by people. now, to go somewhere else. What about people? Wanting someone, to be a friend, to love, to be with in anyway. Is this materialism? You want something right? YOu can never actually own such an object, but the want is there and the thought of "owning" them is there. The reason I bring this up is there's talk of this at school. Yes, the funness of the Gifted students discussions. So far, we've gotten to materialism as the wanting of an object that you can obtain in anyway. I know, broad, but it's philosophy. The possibilities...

By definition, wouldn't a materialist be somebody who believes that matter is real?

I find me self down many times. Lets face it you can’t expect every single day of your life to be the greatest. Like most artist and musicians I decided to express my feelings, in my own way, by driving. Some of us draw a picture/paint a picture, while others make/play music. We as humans most find something that brings out emotional valance to its rightful state.

I, at times, found my self asking the same question. Why do I need a machine to make my self feel better? Well, I guess great writers, artist, and musicians should be asking them selves the same question. I agree with what kaoru-tochiro said, and its similar to what I advised when is appropriate, and that is “Too much or too less of everything is bad for you”. Each and every one of us needs to find that one thing that makes us happy, and we must also accept the fact that not all of us are the same. So don’t let society dictate how you should be.

We all feel that way sometimes but my friend one said "if you die and thats it what then? you had nothing you wanted your whole life but if your good and have things you want you still can get to heaven if thats what happens i doubt you gotta suffer your whole life just to get something good later if you even have a later." I think get your S15 but still be a good person and you'll be happy your whole life you allways want more but thats just nature. I really could use a set of JDM one piece headlights now that i think of it. But i'm going work hard save up and get them just to find somthing else its kinda the game of life you know. And start by enjoying spring break!

Materialism isn't about having things...it's more about living to have things. There are people out there who have a ton of material possessions, and if their house burned down tonight, they could brush themselves off and start over again witha humble attitude. Then you have those who have a ton of "toys" and those toys become the focus of their life. The mentality of "my life's better than yours because I have a better car, a faster computer, and more channels on my satellite dish." These are the ones who if all that was taken away from them they would just shrivel up and probably get a ton of ulcers from worrying about how they can replace that stuff ASAP.

It is not wrong to want things. I think we ALL desire to live a little better than where we are currently at. We all want a new car, we all want to be in excellent shape, we all want a big house, I could go on....but its when that becomes your sould\ purpose for living life that causes a problem. I personally have seen too many people who hurt others while on their quest for these goods. They didn't care what it took to get them, put off friends and family matters, etc, just for the sake of going and getting whatever it is that they wanted to so they can snap a pic to post on a message board in their 1,428th "Look what I bought today" thread.

I don't want a new car, or a bigger house - I do want to get the toyota's radiator re-cored, but I don't think that that counts as being materialistic. "Hey man, did you check out my new radiator core?, I just got it yesterday, it's sooo much better than yours."

Well imho there's a little bit of materialism in everyone, just take a look at communism, it's a great system, but there's always someone coming out with more typically more liberties, wealth, and objects than anyone else living under the communistic state, thus leading to civil unrest and the imminent rebellion, the military coup d'etat, to stop a certain dictatorship in order to give life to another reign of corruption....

Also another thing that is among the capitalist society is the expression "keeping up with the Joneses" which means that if Neighbor A gets something (i.e a new automobile) then Neighbors B and C have to get a newer automobile of similar price or greater with more options and features. It always happens throughout American Suburbia.

In conclusion, everybody has a certain kind of materialistic trait even if they deny it. It's to feed out ID otherwise known as the dark side of our being which wants what it wants when it wants it. Our Superego (the good side) tries to keep us from being materialistic, and there is a constant struggle between the ID and the Superego to control the Ego (the conscious self that is visible to everyone)
