Does your car cause problems at home?

Well, every day for the past several weeks, me and my girl have gotten into a huge argument over the amount of money and time/effort I spend on my car. We are not married, and we don't share bank accounts, so all the money I spend on my car is money that I have earned and is 100% mine to spend. She has NO job, and NO income (which means that I support her), yet feels compelled to comment negatively on how much money I put into my car. I spend alot of money on her as well, especially on bills and everything, and I'm in the process of buying her a new car because her car is a total piece of shit. We go out all the time, and I spend all kinds of money on dinners and bar tabs, and movies, and coffee, and everything... She also has NO hobbies of her own (unless you considder smoking weed a hobby), and I have more hobbies than I know what to do with (music, car, computer, reading, blah blah blah), so she has no idea why I put effort into these things.
It really really pisses me off that she takes all of that for granted.
So my question is, are there others on this forum who have the same problem? Does your car hobby cause problems with your significant other?

Do parents count? My mom and dad are always mad that I want to spend my spare money on my car. Granted, I'm in a "rough spot" right now b/c I'm waiting for my summer job to start up once I'm past finals, but it keeps me sane. My car is my outlet. I sold my motorcycle, so my car is all I've got left. It's not just transportation, and I really want it to be ME, not just whatever people say looks cool. Even my friends rag on me about me spending money on "that pit"... "Are you ever going to get anything out of the money you put into that THING?" No, but I like it anyway. Leave me alone.

My car addictions dont cause any problems. My wife says aslong as I can pay the bills she could careless what I buy. I love my wife!:D

That's another thing too... Like 94SolGrl pointed out... she thinks I spend too much time worrying about it, like when I have to park out in front of the house where it could get broken into, and she says shit like "how come you worry so much about your car, but you never worry about me?"...
"Because I don't have to leave you out at the curb all night where someone might come and steal/damage you!" If I did, I guarantee that I would worry about her more than I worry about my car being out there! She doesn't understand that though.

Its a point of discussion from time to time, but it never really gets to be an arguement. We figure if we have bills paid, money put in the bank for retirement, money put away for a rainy day, then we can spend some of the leftover money on whatever floats our boat.

Well, I have no significant other, but my cars still manage to get me in $hit. Most of you probably know, I still live at home. And for most of the year, I have my 2cars, and my dad has his SUV and his boat, all trying to fit into the driveway. Its not wide enough to park 2 vehicles side-by-side, so I usuially have to move dad's SUV to get my car out. I usuially leave the Sentra on the road, so I can get out. And if my car should be blocking dad's for any reason, he will yell and make a big deal out of it.
Also, I love to work on my cars. Rarely are both of them in running condition, im usuially working on something. Its one of the few things I enjoy doing (sometimes its frustrating as hell, but rewarding) My parents hate the fact that I am always working on something, and they were even more angered when I bought the Sentra. Is it a crime to own 2 cars?
We just had a fight the other day. Mom randomly goes around the house looking for stuff to clean up. I came home from work, and she tells me she threw out a bunch of "old wires" that were under my bed. These "old wires" happened to be about 15ft of 4ga power wire, a 20ft RCA cable and a bag containing gold plated connecters, various fuses and a soldering iron. Like $100 CDN worth of stuff!! Thankfully, I was able to go through the trash and get it back.
Now, I could see her getting mad, if the stuff was in the way or in the middle of the floor, but it was out of sight under my bed!!1 And this happens all the time, instruction manuals, varous electrical and mechanical parts get chucked, recipts get thrown out.

It's not really an issue now but when I met my g/f who is Norwegian (I'm English), I was working overseas and quite happy with Supra RZ in the drive and a classic '64 mini for daily use.
First of all the mini went when I moved back to the UK and then the final sacrifice, selling the Supra to move to Norge.
It's still a sore point that now and again comes up if we're fighting, especially as I now have to drive her crappy Corsa, but at the end of the day a worthwhile sacrifice (just don't tell her that, OK?).

That sux your mom gets on your case. When I got into the whole custom truck thing when I was like 12 my mom thought it was odd but let me have the magazines. When I got my first truck when I was still 15(im 21 now) and I showed an interest in adding some things to make it look better and as she put it make it a "teenagers ride" she understood why. Just talk to her about why you're into it and maybe she'll be able to understand. By the way, what kind of truck are you getting and what do you plan to do to it(i.e.-lower it, lift it, etc.)??

nah she understands perfectly..she is actually taking me to the NY international Autoshow this weekend (5 hour train ride) and tagging along with me and my dad. its gonna be fun..
as for the truck...its a Black 92 Toyota Pickup...i dont think im gonna do anything to it because its kinda old and rusted under neath. It needs new ball joints and junk...but if i do do nething to it ill lift it a bit and put bigger tires on it. it could prolly use some rims too ...hmm..

Thats a rotten thing to do to stuff thats tucked away. Rich, are you still planning on going into the service? If you are and plan on keeping your stuff at home. I suggest boxing everything up and storing it someplace else. Or, at least, have it put away in the garage so moms cleaning itches don't wipe you out.
My dad lost his entire baseball card collection among other things while he was in the Navy (way back in 55-58) because his mom wanted to "tidy" his room. Just a word of caution.

Mine did cause tension in my last relationship, though as agreed we had our own money.
What killed it was the car club I was involved with, so she says. Either way I am better off without her as that is one major stress I didn't need.

I think it's fair to say that my car causes friction with my other half, but from a different angle. Most people here know that I drive a beater, and I'm quite comfortable with it.However,it's getting to the stage where it is starting to disintigrate.Mechanically, the drivetrain is still solid, but little niggles like the dadio, the boot lock, the airconditioning have all given up.In short,it's time for a new car.My good lady, however, does not understand the concept of residual value. The car has none, and will have none regardless of how much you spend fixing the niggly bits.As it stands,it is worth the value of its engine to a wrecker. It's not worth a cent more if the remote boot latch,or the radio,or the aircon is working.
How can I convince her that it has come time to replace it with something worth maintaining?

my mom used to go around and 'tidy' the house by throwing away receipts and boxes and stuff, but my brother and i have caused more arguments about it that it is worth. so she doesn't tidy our rooms anymore, she just nags at us to do it.
luckly the girl i like is interested in cars, so i doubt there will be any problems there if we decide to get into a serious relationship. (famous last words?)

No problems so far, Mac has hobbies of his own and so do I, and we have shared hobbies together. Both of us have our own money, but we both try to be reasonable with the amount spent on entertainment, and as yet no rifts have formed.

YES!! My husband absolutely hates my Prelude (it doesn't help that he's 6'5 and can't fit behind the wheel). He's tried to get me to sell it numerous times, but (girl manipulation) a few tears quickly shuts him up. He doesn't want me to put any mods on it, he doesn't want me to really do anything to it, but he's learned that I will do as I please with MY car (yes my car, everything is in my name, there is no reference to him at all) and he just says that if I break it it's my own damn fault. He helps me a little bit when I get working on it, if I get stuck or need muscle, but he complains the entire time. I've practically gotta beg if I want to buy something for it, even if its upholstery cleaner or new wipers! Anyone got any tips for getting him to understand my passion, and possibly getting him to be a bit more helpful and supportive?

Havent figured out what I am going to do with my cars yet...Anyone wanna babysit 2 cars for the summer? :D
I think im gonna start looking for a place of my own when I get back in the fall.
Sucks to hear about the loss of those baseball cards (even though it happened WAY before I was born). Those would have been worth a bundle today!

Good luck with boot camp and your job training, I'm in the AF, so I only had 6 weeks boot camp to deal with, and then 3 months of tech training. It's all one big mind game, folding shirts and towels into 6 inch squares, whoo hoo!!! Really boring, but it is kinda tough not being able to contact your family. You end up building some strong friendships with the people that you dorm with. Any info I can help ya out with, feel free to ask.

It's still a sore point that now and again comes up if we're fighting, especially as I now have to drive her crappy Corsa, but at the end of the day a worthwhile sacrifice (just don't tell her that, OK?).
Hey is that your GF with your old Supra :D :D

If I had a nickle for every time I've heard that, I'd have alot more money to spend on my car LOL.

When my wife starts paying for the house, 3 cars, jet ski, boat, electricity, insurance, credit cards, cell phones, or anything else than she can start having a say in what I spend on Golf, computers, video games, and whatever else I decide to buy.

My husband tries to bring up all of the insurance and legal issues as well, but I'll just get on the net and search up everything I can on whatever issue it is that he is currently b*tch*ng about and prove him wrong. He hates it when I do that, but he's learning. For some reason he absolutely hates any foreign cars, and has threatened to take a sledge hammer to my Prelude. He's always complaining about how much trouble it is, when it has broken down once in the 2 years I've had it, while his Ford Bronco has been parked longer than I can remember.

Ford owners NEVER learn. Take my word for it. :o I know a guy w/a $35,000+ FORD FOCUS ZX3!!!!!!! They are always right, and especially if they're guys.

My car causes me problems whether at home or on the road :o :D
So this week's Neon Drama Award goes to an O2 sensor. Last week it was a coolant temp sensor (don't buy sensors from Autozone btw).

No problems at home for me, my parents support whatever I want to do to my truck. My dad really likes the H2 and my mom doesnt and when I said it doesn't really matter what you think b/c its dads money and hes the one driving it, she got rather pissed at me. And my dad just chuckled like he always does.

Never? That's why I am getting rid of my Focus right?
I am going to get a younger sibling for my Impreza.....just got to decide how much I want to spend at which Subaru dealer.....
The ZX3 is a nice car as long as there is nothing going wrong with it, meaning it is seldom a nice car.....
So you going to rephrase that last statement Miss Saturntangerine?:o

Reading all this makes me quite glad of my parents and their attitudes on things.
Mom never dared throw anything away that she wasn't absolutley sure was trash without asking me what it was. Most times I could identify it immediately, so none of my stuff went the way of the dumpster unless I put it there.
My wife, now....
She has her "pay attention to meeeeeee!!!" moments, but they're beginning to lessen now. Trick is, get her to enjoy what you enjoy. She used to verbally scalp me everytime she caught me watching WWE programming(no bad comments please, I've heard them all). After a bit, she would watch it when I did, but only to complain about how stupid it was. Then she'd holler "kick his arse!" every now and then. Then she started having her favorites, and now she may enjoy it even more than I do.

Hey, I hear you on the WWE, I've got every pay per view and RAW on VHS tape (self recorded) since 1992!! I enjoy WWE with my husband, and usually for a few days after a good pay per view, he's pretty decent about my car. Video games are another big thing, I'm a huge collector, and thankfully, so is my husband. We've got 2 tv's in the living room so that we don't even have to fight over the systems. All in all, it could be a lot worse, but if I want to go out and work on my car, I just put one of his fav. games in the machine and a controller in his hand, and he'll be content for hours (sometimes days...)

You're smart. You live in PA. :) That, and I know approximately where you live so the threat of me beating you up (JOKING) is greater for you than other members. ;)

At Last, I have won a major battle in the war over my car!!! All because of an unexpected ally... my Mother in Law!! I can now do whatever I please with my car, and my husband has actually offered to spring for a cd player for her, as well as taking care of all of my current repair costs (so far we've replaced 2 of the computers, and a couple of minor fuel system components) *sigh* life is good!! Three cheers for Mom!!

Back when I had a girlfriend (lasted all of 2 weeks) she nagged me about spending money on my stereo, and how the bass drowned out the lyrics.
As far as parents go, I just stopped telling em about stuff. I figure they will find out sooner or later, and when they do, what are they gonna say? Nothing! I already bought the stuff and its paid for
