High mileage a concern??

Theres an 88 CRX Si around where I live with 235,000 MILES it says, the guy wants $8000, it has only a SMALL amount of rust by the sunroof and the rest of the car is rust free. He put on 16" Enkei rims, lowered it 2", has an alarm, new muffler, and a sweet stereo (Pioneer MP3 deck, Rockford Fosgate 900 watt amp, fosgate speakers, and 2 Kicker Comp subs). He claims that the engine runs great and everything. I still have yet to look at it.
The question is, should I stay away from this car since it has so many miles on it? Im looking to swap in a z6 or y8 engine a little while after I get it, but what about worn drivetrain or similar problems?? What are the common problems to come after so many miles?? Tell me what you all think!

(Yes I know $8000 is high, but finding a CRX without mods, stock, and low kilometers is pretty hard. Plus they pretty much tax on the price of the mods around here, so go figure.) (so 4000 CRX, +2000 rims, +1000 for alarm/lowering, +2000 stereo = $9000.) so ya

Well if your really interested I'm interested in selling it.... i think.

First it has paint and rust issues. Paint is peeling like a mofo. Rust is on rear quarters and around the windshield (its just surface around window no biggie) Also has some rust on drivers door. So it will need some body work.

Second. Center console is cracked from some biatch that broke into it and stole the deck (before I had it). You can get one for $20-$50 off ebay. Also has a cracked gauge cluster (I dont even notice it so haven't even bothered looking for one)

181xxxkm's on body. ZC engine and tranny swap was done a month and a half ago. That cost me $3000cdn. I also have replaced alternator, motor mounts, brake lines, brake shoes, timing belt on old and new engine, water pump on old and new engine, axels.

I didn't really think anyone would actually want to buy my car for $6500
:( I'd like something new but I like my car :(

hmm, ya i dont know what the hell i want to do. I think it would be alright if that guys CRX was in good condition all around, but damn these cars cost so much here.

Do you have any more pictures of your car 88DX? How bad is the rust on the quarter panels and on the door?

[EDIT]
I am interested though, I want to get a Wings West body kit, and maybe if I bought yours, I could get the kit and repaint it and have a good body with a kit, and a newer ZC engine, with all your new parts.

Post some pics if you have any and i'll get back to you tommorow alright.

Okay I asked that guy about the engine, it actually has 235,000 KILOMETERS on it, NOT miles. He also said that the previous owner had the engine rebuilt at 195,000 Kilometers, and that it runs perfect. He also had the timing belt replaced and changes the oil every 4000 kilometers with synthetic. He also replaced the alternator awhile ago as well.

So how does that sound?

With the 3 hondas I have owned and the extra 2 in my family I do the work for. It seen that once you get to 180K miles on Hondas they start to nickle and dime. This is not to say that there are not exceptions to this statement and if you keep up on maintence you may be fine. But I would not pay more than 2500 for that guys car even with all the stuff on it. It just seems like there could be a better deal especially if you want to do an engine swap.

Man I've been searching the classifieds for the past 5 months, and I havent seen one CRX or hatch worth getting for $2500.

Here are some 88-91 Civic/CRX price examples in my area:

91 Civic Si, $5000 w/ smaller stereo, LS rims, some rust on quarter panels, and rocker panels, and underneath.

91 Civic Si, someone offered him $8900. Was in a wreck, had new paint, gay looking flame stripe, 17" rims, ractive exhaust, and CAI intake. Low km engine. Smaller stereo.

90 Civic Si, bought stolen for $10,000. Had B16 swap, exhaust, intake, 16" Enkei Racing rims, clear corners/bumper lights, and half assed wiring job and painted interior. SIR wing, and lowered. maybe more.

91 CRX Si, stock, cd player, alarm, excellent condition, many new parts ad says. $7900 (already sold)

89 CRX Si, stock, replaced floorboards, rocker panels, and some other smaller parts. $7900

91 CRX Si, 17" rims, new engine, custom paint, WW front bumper, says too many mods to list. $12,000

89 CRX Si, new m3 yellow paint(dont want a yellow car) $5900, rebuilt engine, 5 spoke ugly rims, exhaust, intake, nice body, clarion stereo, and mechanically sound.

88 CRX DX, (88CRX's car), ZC engine/tranny, but body needs work. $6500

So ya, there's the odd car which is cheap, but I live in a small town where I have to drive 2 to 4 hours to see any of these cars, and by the time I have things worked out, they're sold already. I don't know, CRX's and Civics sell cheaper in Alberta, but I don't know how that would work having to get off work or school, as well as my dad get off work, to go look at it, and if its good then buy it and drive back. or if it turns out that its not worth getting, thats a trip across the province and back. But ya, im puzzled on what to do now, can anyone enlighten me?

Ya i've been checking on Canadatrader.com. But if I ever found a decent CRX that was in Ontario or Alberta, I would have to book like a week off of work, as well as my dad, fly down there, look at it, and if its even worth buying, then we'd have to drive it all the way back to Saskatchewan. Also what if we fly down there, get there, and they've already sold it. I hate being stuck in Saskatchewan, it sucks ass.

hey eklipze. I don't know if I would get that one in sask for 8. Infact don't buy a car in sask. they are so much more because we don't have as much of a supply as alberta or ontario. I bet you can find something nice for cheaper. I will check around for ya I know a lot of people in edmonton and calgary so i will see whati can do! :)

what year/gen? before they got nice?

eklipz
04-16-2003, 08:44 PM
Hmm, you know I really want a CRX, but it would probably make the most sense to wait I guess. Even though I want one so damn bad.

I have a 1986 Nissan 300zx GL 2+2, the z31 body style.
-blue
-2+2 (4 seater)
-289000 Kilometers
-new rotors and calipers all around
-new ball joints, and strut-rod bushings
-has had injectors and timing belt replaced
-Clarion DX615 head unit

It's rusted in the fender wells, the clear coat is peeling in some spots, and the mirrors are broken but im fixing them. It runs good, right now I have to take it in to fix a coolant leak, so after i do that and get the mirrors fixed it should be ready to go. The reason I'm selling it is because I could either pay to fix it up, or sell it and get a CRX which I've wanted for a long time now. I don't like the looks of this car as much as a CRX and would rather fix a CRX up instead to tell you the honest truth. I would really like to fix up my 300zx, but I think the end result of a CRX would please me more. So ya, thats my story.

I'm looking to get about $2500 firm for my car, and I would be willing to trade for your car 88CRX. But you were probably thinking I had a z32 hey? :P

88CRX
04-16-2003, 08:47 PM
:( yea.

I did wrong. I wanted a crx so bad that I bought the first one I could find. It has cost me a fortune since then. It has put me in debt and kinda sucked. So be patient the right deal will come along.

Also I'm just worried about selling my car then going through the hassle of getting another car and having everything break down...... again. I hope to be able to afford a new car by the time honda brings the ctr over..... i hope.

Yeah sorry about your misinterpretation, I would love to have a 90+ 300zx, those are sweet.

Yeah i'll most likely e-mail the guy and ask him how low he would go in selling his car, and see from there. But unless he goes down $2000 i doubt i will buy it :(.

Yeh, dont rush it. And don't buy rust. If I end up fixing up the body of my car its gonna cost a small fortune. RUST SUCKS!!

No kidding hey. That white CRX with the floorboard's repaired lowered the price down to $5500. Thats a lot better than $7900. But i still don't think I'd get it because I hate the idea of having a welded in floor :S.

i might add that at 235,000KM thats only ~146,875 miles. Thats entirely bad for a 15 year old CRX.

At the average of 12,000 miles per year thats ~180,000 that SHOULD be on the engine. so your about 35k miles under on milage.

Just my two cents ... Also ... i dont know the conversion for canadian dollars but its probly on par when you actually convert it.

89 CRX Si, stock, replaced floorboards, rocker panels, and some other smaller parts. $7900

Its a bummer that 4th gens are so expensive around you area that 89 CRX Si might be agood idea depending on what they mean by "other small parts." Check the mileage. One thing I try to adhear to when buying a used Honda is take 180,000 - (Actual miles on Car) and then multiply by .05 US Dollars approximatley .08 CAD and that will give a good approximate value of the vehicle. The rational behind this is that the number you come up with is also the approximate amount you can expect to pay in repairs over the next 4-5 years. Baring any extreme circumstances, like wrecks. Hope any of this helps.

Tell him to keep the stereo and the rims....

I hate when people try to get back their money from mods when the sell cars. If he really wants to sell the car, he will find a seperate buyer for all that other bs. I got my 91 Si 140k miles, and it had 99 si rims, and eibach 2" springs already on it. Perfect interior, near perfect body.....$3000 cash US.
