1999 A6 Shifting problem

Recently purchased this and it was hit in the rear, and seems to have been pushed up onto a curb. the underbody has abit of damage.
The problem i'm having is that when i put the car in drive, it acts as if it's in neutral. Put it in 4 and it goes into drive. put it in 3 and it goes into 4 etc...
Anyone ever come across this problem or have any advice on this at all? Perhaps a shifter mechanism or cable is messed up?:screwy:
