Drivers window stuck

I seem to be having trouble with my drivers side window; the window rolls down ok, but when I go to roll it up it wont move, I can hear the motor running. Does anyone know what it could be and if its easliy fixed. Also, I seem to be having some resistance with the door panel, on the bottom when the carpeted area is, I dont want to force it; could there maybe be a screw I am missing. Thanks

What year is your town car? Sounds like those three plastic clutch bushings inside the window motor. They are like 8 bucks for a three pack at the auto parts store. They are round nylon looking things. This is very common on the Ford window motors, I have fixed so many I couldn't possibility give you a number. I have the bushings if you need them, the ones I have don't deteriorate like the OEM ones. I also have rebuilt motors, or I can rebuild yours as well.

It's a 97. The window is also loose, you can push it up and down by hand. Thanks for your help

Yes it's those bushings or the window regulator.

Ok, thanks. I went up to the auto parts store and got a new motor and regulator; I will prolly change it tom. Do you know if on this car everything is bolts or, if they use rivets? Thanks

Rivets if it hasn't been changed before. Use 1/4 inch fasteners to replace the rivets.

Ok, I am hopeing that it will just be the motor that is bad. I think that it might be. When I got out of work last night, my window was about 1/2 inch down and when I hit the switch it seems like the motor may have some internal damage, so hopefully it is the bushings. I am wondering tho, if I have the door cracked open, should I change the regulator, even if its not broken.

Changing the regulator is a fairly big job for most people not familiar with the set up. I've changed and removed a bunch, so I know all the tricks. If you already bought the regulator assembly, you might as well replace it. The big trick is removing the window glass so you have as much room as possible to get the regulator out. Take the motor off the regulator first. If you think you are up to it, go for it.
I really think your motor is fine, if you heard it running. Here is a picture of one I just opened up. It's a good one, but I will replace the three bushings any way. Notice how the bushings are out of round, they are starting to break down. Over time they will crumble and fall apart. The motor will spin free, and not drive the gear that meshes with the regulator.

Your right, it was the regulator that was bad; the top cable snapped. I had a friend that knows about cars help me, and we were able to change it in a couple hours. Seeing that I already had the motor that I bought from Autozone I decided to change that too, even though the old one was good; better safe than sorry. I figure I can always repack the old motor with new bushings and maybe put it on ebay. Once we got the new motor and regulator in, we just had to make some minor adjustments to get the window to rise straight. Thanks for your help with this matter.

Good deal on the fix. You could always keep the motor for a spare. Drivers side front will fit the passenger side rear door. Passenger front door will fit the driver side rear door.
