It would seem that a few of the old members are still around but only lurking in the midst.

I've just completed my second off road half marathon a couple of weeks ago and I have an on road half marathon in a couple of months time.

I'm now driving a silver 2 tonne SUV these days - nothing sporty and it spends most of the time passing the countryside with the cruise control as we rediscover the great outdoors. And when the heavens open it doubles as a waterproof alternative to camping out.

There's a picture of our last holidays attached

I remain gainfully employed and drop by from time to time - just lurking in the background. I'll leave it to the newbies most of the time as I watch the seasons pass by. I hope you are well wherever you are.

Yeah I've gotten sucked into a bunch of other forums since... rx7club, advrider, redtailboas, electronic cigarette forum, the firing line, snuson... I'm a forum addict. My g/f thinks its hilarious, even though she's just as addicted to facebook. I just needed to show her my 9 year membership to this one! Hah!

'sup guys? Yeah, we get busy and have other things to do. Just lurk most of the time now. Maybe we need to bring back some of the more colorful members so we can have some old time shouting matches again. LOL

My daughter killed the car that originally brought me to this forum. Funny how an engine needs to have clean oil once in a while.

Me neither... but my frikkin camaro still ain't on the road. Needed a new (bigger) radiator and fan to solve a cooling problem, which required a short water pump, which required pulleys which also help with alleviate a slipping alt belt... when wiring up the fan I noticed how bad the carpet was... so I pulled the carpet to find some hill-billy version of sound dampener that was looked like it has water stains on it (rust colored), so I pulled that and found I need new floor pans.... AND THEN..... my wife decided it was time to redo the pool area, and I had to rent an excavator (which was VERY fun), and then I had to put up brick faced block walls which a mason friend assured me was easy and that he'd help me... and of course the bastard never showed up. So NOW I have to pay another mason to finish it up because I threw out my back... Which would make laying on a creeper welding in new pans seem like something that should be pretty doable.... But now she wants to have a new year's party... and that means I need to start building my bar................. . . . . . . . . . . LOL.... at what point does the world open up and swallow you whole?

This place pretty much followed Lance Armstrong's career.

That is how a LOT of the forum boards are now. Social media killed them. I used to moderate a local Nissan forum and it turned to a ghost board about 4 years ago. It is sad. I miss the old forum days. Social media just isn't the same. You can't go and search old build threads, or old posts that had good information. Now it is just google - and the info there is not always reliable. I liked picking the brains of the people who had "been there, done that" and knew what they were talking about.

Oh well. Maybe the old forums will make a comeback. We can always hope.

I'd also say Facebook groups is killing forums. I'm in a couple that are rather large and the administration asked if people would like to move to a forum so there'd be better control of content and not under Facebook, but member, oversight. It got shot down. Nobody wants to go to another site. They want everything there, in one app, under one large sight.

Somebody I know posted on Facebook asking where we cut our teeth on the internet. Well I remembered this place and just had to come back and log in.

It's amazing how many places people mentioned, that were titans nearly twenty years ago, aren't even shadows of their former selves. Newgrounds, Ebaums World, FunnyJunk, Rotten, and others are gone or inactive.

Hope you all are staying safe.

Well said, glad to see everything's still moving along!

At a much slower pace though.

The influence of social networks is being felt. Some times I wait weeks for responses to my posts, as opposed to hours or up to one day, a decade ago when I first joined

Yeah, we used to have fairly lively conversations, even in the individual car sections, with people getting their questions answered pretty rapidly. But FB and other sites have definitely made most forums ghost towns.

The (automotive) IQ, at least, on Facebook, Twitter, or NextDoor, is much lower I feel.

There, it's more about "hey cool, you got a new car, let's go for a ride sometime", than anything technically useful. That, and all the notices about going to ones OB-GYN, or getting their nails or hair colored.

In general, but individual marque pages can have a lot of good tech questions getting answers almost immediately. The big issue is searching and archiving SUCKS on FB, so if you need a question answered, you have a hard time just searching for a previous conversation with the answers or a detailed how-to. So you have to ask again and then you get trolls who say "search for it!" It's just better to ask someone who's done wheat you're attempting, even if they've already told someone else in the past.

I've found, however, that the best way to get a correct answer on FB is to post a completely incorrect answer, and you will be corrected by a few dozen people with the proper answer! lol!

1. "individual marque pages" You mean like a Facebook group dedicated to a certain make or model of car?

2. False positives. I'd rather come here to AF and wait forever(due to lack of traffic here, not of knowledge by the way) to get a correct response. Not to mention, "search" on Facebook, for what it's worth, is at best a joke. So typing in IE: "BMW M group" might return you every BMW M facebook group except the one you posted in a couple days ago, LOL.

I have brought it up before, but, have Igor or any of his top staff considered updating this forum engine? This interface does remind me of forum interfaces from around turn of Millennium, y' know?

Aspiring members may stumble across A.F., be put off by the old interface, and miss out completely on the demonstrated automotive knowledge base we do have here.
