I didn't have a pickle fork, but I was able to get my axles out. I'm saying that you can get the hub to come off of the axle without taking it loose from that knuckle that you have your pickle fork on.
If you just want to get your axles out, you don't need to pry anymore with the pickle fork.
Go ahead and take your brake rotor off. Then you can see better. I think you've missed a bolt that you need to remove. Once you've got the right bolts off, your front hub will be able to flop around in a whole bunch of directions. It'll be very floppy. You should be able to flop it up and towards the front or back, and get the end of the axle to come out of the hub.
Good luck. I know these instructions suck.

I just ran out to the parking lot to look at my car, and my instructions seem even more lame now.
I think I took loose the big bolt ((about 3 or 4 inches long) and the nut that holds it on) that goes from the bottom of the strut to the lower control arm. I also took loose the little nut that attaches the sway bar to the lower control arm. There are also two big bolts and nuts about an inch away from each other, and both of those have to come out.
I don't think it'll actually be 'floppy' like I said earlier, but you should have a little more range of motion to pull the hub down and to the left, and try to move the little piece of axle sticking into the hub the opposite direction, up and to the right.
This mission is highly dangerous. Please print this out, because this post will self-destruct in five seconds.

Hey, Sk8tr!
I changed my driver's side half shaft yesterday, so I had a chance to follow my own instructions.
No, I still couldn't get my ball joint to come apart, but I remembered how I got it out last time. I took out the bolt holding the lower control arm to the car's body.
Why grunt and strain with that stupid ball joint when Fshht! You can take out the bolt on the upper part of the lower control arm.
Once I took that out and pulled that part of the arm free of the body, it was floppy, as I'd mentioned to you, and easy to take the axle out. And not hard to put the new one in.
There for everyone- you don't have to screw with the ball joint unless you feel like it. Take out the upper bolt!
