temperature gauge jetta 2002

my temperature gauge on my jetta 2002 (not diesel) sometimes works sometimes gauge will not move or moves to normal and than after a while it goes back down, keep thinking its the sensor but dont want to guess, help is much appreciated thanks

First and foremost check your coolant level, check for leaks. If ok, it's more than likely your coolant temp sensor, thermostat, water pump. How many miles on your Jetta? You may also need to change your timing belt. Timing belt and water pump will be changed together.

franco thanks for the message. no leaks i have 90,000 km i know i am due for a timing belt, i have no clue what could be the problem because sometimes it works mint and sometimes i get no temp. at all. i appreciate the help thanks you again

Most likely it is the sensor problem, i have experienced it few times. You may take it out and polish the copper part, it may save you $30 bucks from buying a new part. It is a easy fix, it is located the right side of the engine (for my 1.8T), it maybe different if you have other engines.

The next think you may want to check, or to replace is the themostat, the part is not expensive, $30 from dealer, however, it is a bit tricky to replace it, so perpare to spend some money for labour.

Hey k-i-d-d-o much thanks if i take the sensor out to clean it would it leak the anti freeze. my engine is a 2litre or would it be easier to change altogether.

I have the 2.0 if you're going to change the coolant temp sensor first. I changed mine and it was a breeze. Maybe 3 min total. No tools needed. Just pull the plastic retaining clip and remove sensor. One major thing! Get the sensor and a new retaining clip from the dealer. About $30. The other sensors are not good. The sensor is located on the upper radiator hose. Follow it to the sensor. Do it when engine is cold. You will lose about 1 table spoon of coolant.
