Noise from front end

hello,

My sons 1997 900 s hatchback is making a strange noise from the front end when the car is in motion. The sound is like "Whooo whoo whoo" and repeats faster as the car increases in speed. That's the best I can do on that sound - sorry. The sounds seems to be coming from the right front.

I thought it was a front wheel bearing but when I did that 12 and 6 shake to the tire it seemed pretty darn tight. No abnormal wear on the tire. I took it to the local farm & fleet and they did the free front inspection. They took about 20 minutes and they couldn't see anything loose in the wheel bearing or tie rods. His guess was a transmission bearing and suggested that I take it to a Saab dealer.

Would a CV joint cause this?
Could it still be the wheel bearing?
Is there a history of transmission problems on this car? The car has a 5 speed manual transmission. It shifts fairly smooth still and I don't feel any excessive vibes on the stick while in gear and moving.
