Hey guys,
So we've triangulated our electrical problems to the ignition switch area and im wondering how i would go about fixing an arcing problem with the contacts? This is of course assuming that my problem is not the actual switch itself but rather just a buildup of carbon at the contacts...

While i do know a bit about cars, im afraid as far as the electrical goes im a bit lost so if you guys have any advice or information, please go easy on the cranium!

Also, theres this big @#$*-off metal plate underneath the steering column, am i going to need to remove this to get to the switch?

I am confused, are you looking into replacing the ignition switch? There is write-up in tips and maintenance on how to do it. The metal plate to remove below the steering colum is a piece of cake to get off. Just 4 bolts and a couple nuts if I remember right.

Otherwise, check your Private Messages.

See thread at link below located at our Buick Regal forum dating back to 2006. Same ignition switch, same issue related to carbon buildup and contact arcing. I've done it. Just have to take your time and put it back together properly and carefully especially the springs and cams.

The 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix has an electronic ignition system. I just replaced mine and it was a piece of cake. Go to eHow.com and ask how to replace ignition in a 1997 Grand Prix. They will give you a step by step instructions. As far as arcing, you would be best served to replace the electronics rather that trying to clean the contacts. You will need a switch specifically for a 1997, there is no interchange found.
