Does a 97 Jetta 2.0 have a timing belt?

I now - it must seem like a dumb question but I do not know?

Yes, it's a timing belt.
The only production volkswagen engines with timing chains is the 12v/24v VR6 engines, the VR5 engine, the 30v V6 and the W8.

And no, not all engines have one.

all internal combustion/piston engines have timing belts/chains...

ohc as well as internal cam motors have timing chains...

Timing gears, used in older pushrod engines and even modern inline engines.

that's like when the v8 hot rodder switch from timing chains to the gear drive setup, and it's all whiney...
