1999 Passat - Changing Brake light

Does anyone have the procedure for changing the rear passenger brake light? I looked at the area in the trunk, there are a couple of slits in the trunk carpet but I don't see how you get to the brake lights without cutting the carpet and pulling it aside. I assume the bulbs and connections are behind the carpet. Thanks for the help!!! Mike
