ok....here's the thing....at work i post in all caps.....if u want a reason...i don't care to explain but my circumstances require me to post in caps. I'm sure everyone has my posts and some of you have politely asked my not to post in caps....in return i politely told you why and went as far as putting the reason in my sig. some of you see this as shouting and/ or being rude.....but i've been doing this since august 02 and i guess i've been shouting for a long time:D but anyways....i know everyone in the civic/ crx forum has come to accept this and some of you havn't....in truth i really don't care b/c my posts have mostly kept to the subject.....i i do agree that the long post look a lil jumbled....so i 'll just post the long ones at home.....but i just want to know u guys/ gals opnions.....not everyone has the same circumstances and i know that i'm not the first to come here that has to post in caps at work....but seems like the only one that stayed.....but i just want opnions....good or bad...

oh, you know your cool with me. I understand your circumstances, and believe that you even try to explain to people why. Hell most people wouldn't put anything in their sig about it. You have never really caused any trouble, so you know im on your side.

i've never asked why, but im guessing your work has some sort of keypress tracking stuff?

or maybe because at work, a program that has to be on all of the time, caps lock must be on at all times:confused:

Oz

I still consider it rude, because in quite a few PMs and times it has come up in OT, I've never seen a satisfactory explanation other than 'I have to while at work'. And none of that excuses the fact that NO CAPS were used in the post in this thread!!! Caps Lock and Shift are there for a reason, they're not novelties and they're not binary selection - you can mix and match. ;)

If you have a good reason for it then it's ok, which in your case you have a damn good reason for it. It's not annoying or anything, I guess when some people just see it for the first time are annoyed by it maybe. But what is annoying, is when certain people type with very poor punctuation. Such as run on sentences, no punctuation marks, especially when it is a verry long post.

Well generaly I think its very rude, its generaly accepted that it means your shouting. Ok if you intend to shout, but not Ok for an intire post.

However you clearly have no choice in the matter when posting from work. When posting from home your dont use Caps, so its clear your not doing it delibritly to cause trouble or get attention.
Im quite cool with it, and you do make an effort to keep the posts you make from work short, and easy to read.

However since you don't offer any explanation beyond "Im at work" I can see why some ppl might get a little upset with it and be suspecious.

Anyway I dont really know if this is something that should be discussed in an open forum. Its a topic much better suited to PM.

That's just flat out unacceptable.

I don't have a problem with it only because you seem to have gone through so much trouble trying to explain why you have to write in caps that I'm sure you have a decent enough reason for it. Although, since I don't really like reading all caps, alot of times I find myself skipping the post simply because I'm too tired too look at it.

I find it hard to believe that people would imply that it is harder to read something because it is in all caps. Go try Hooked on Phonics!

I understand that there are exteunating circumstances that lie beneath this all, but I find it TERRIBLY obnoxious to read entire posts performed in exclusively capital letters. It is a strain on the eyes and just some how very irksome. I won't bitch and moan about it, but I do find myself bothered by it time and again. I just deal b/c at least you have provided a *somewhat* reason.

Kind of you to cut/paste that line from my PM to into your poll.Ignorant of you not to to reply to the PM.Childish of you to ask me to discuss it in PM form, and then launch a poll on the subject once I've left the board for the day,and arrogant of you not to explain why we should treat you differently to any other member.

Perhaps if you were to actually give us an explanation as to WHY you feel it is neccesary to post in caps, we might all understand, and tolerate this bizarre routine.

So how about it BLU,are you going to tell us what the deal is or are you going to continue to flip us off?

Seeing as message boards like AF are a visual form of communication, we can't exactly type louder to try and stress a point or express strong feelings about something. That's why Caps should be limited to when you feel the need to shout and make people sit up and take notice.

If people use Caps all the time it just dilutes the effectiveness of a quite simple rule. If you can't help it, such as if the dog ate your Caps Lock key, then fine but otherwise can't we all try not to shout.

Here's my take on it....

Like you I am an Engineer and so all design notes and the like have to typed in upper-case per the protocols we adhere to, this is not a problem to me since it is something I have had to do since the first time I picked up a pencil to lay a design on paper.
I also deal with many people across the USA and sometimes globally in e-mail, so I have to adhere to internet protocol of not typing memo's and e-mails in upper-case.

To me, hitting the 'Caps lock' key to switch from full upper case to regular typing is not a big deal and is not too much effort since it comes down to respecting internet protocol.

I also do 80% of my posting from work, so often, to post I have to turn off the caps lock but I don't mind doing this, because once again, it is good manners.

So, if you understand where I am coming from, I understand why your job requires you to type in upper case, but I don't understand why you can't turn off your caps lock as a token of respect to other members on AF.

So, personally, if you want my opinion, unless you have software that stops you posting like anyone else in lower and upper case, I get the impression you are too lazy to turn off the caps lock, which I guess I will just accept for now.......

Without a better explanation I do not understand why you just dont hit the damn capslock button before posting here and hit it again when typing on things at work. Its not like it takes two minutes to hit one key.

No offense to anyone but if you're getting mad at someone posting in all caps even when they have a reason to be doing so, you're just looking for things to get mad at. Its not a big deal so just forget about it and continue looking for things to be angry about.

I don't see anything wrong with typing in caps - I don't think that anybody would be offended if I underlined my entire post, so why would they get upset if I TYPED LIKE THIS?
Or maybe I just don't care because the Subaru 360 Driver's Club newsletter is printed in all caps.

Agreed.

However, I am curious why you can't turn caps off? I have to use caps when I'm using the software at the dealership I work at because it won't accept commands written in lower-case, however, I simply switch the caps off when I go to post. If you have some button tracking program on your computer (and therefore bosses see caps off = not using the software he should be using), understandable. If not, why can't you switch caps off?

then he should leave CAPSLOCK on and type while holding down the shift key.

maybe you should just reexplain it once and for all and if anyone ever askes again we can just tell them to 'stfu n00b' and refer them to this thread.

One requires the simple pressing of the "Caps lock" button, the other requires a rap across the knuckles with a ruler and several more years of schooling.

And how come BLU has never given an explanation? I'm sure it wouldn't be THAT hard to just explain it once and for all.

Forums are the same as chat services. Caps are used for a strong statement or yelling if you will. I consider it rude.

Less than 2 secs are required to lock and unlock your caps. I use Autocad at work all day long as a design engineer. When I post here the cap lock is off.

So I don't buy your excuse, sorry.

The fact that you post in caps when you are at work is not a hard concept to follow at all. It's just not in any way a reason. Why you choose not to expand on the issue is for you alone to know, but for now I'll just have to put it down to ignorance.Clearly, you don't give a shit what other members of this forum think.

Well, continueing on that note, can we then at least expect you to use correct punctuation at home, AND at work?
Initially I didn't care if you posted in Caps or not because, like I said before, I am in the same field as you so I attributed it to that, but now, reading this post, I can only attribute it to arrogance.
Frankly, I don't care where you post from, so whether you be at work or at home, why don't you just do like the rest of us and follow internet etiquette?

If you have to type in caps at work because you don't want to take too long to post in case you're caught, tell us, that would at least give us something to understand.

BTW, I am typing this at work.....do I ask for any special dispensation? NO

BLU,
The way I understand it is that you are saying you post in caps at work so we can differentiate between when you are posting from work or from home, right?

If that is the distinction you want to make, why don't you post in blue text from work and black text from home to create a distinction less prone to offending people?

The reason I said it seemed arrogant was because you did not state you wanted to create a differentiation, you just said you posted in caps because you are at work.....I think if you were to have given a better reason people would be more accepting about the situation.

I think everyone here wants to better understand the situation, after all, it was you who started this whole thread about it.
