I have went to school for Auto Collision but I did not finish my schooling due to lack of money, I had 2 classes to finish, but I have worked 2 jobs in the collision industry and they have not been good experiences. The first one I was hired for hired me as a refinish tech but he only had me detailing entire vehicles in 5 minutes and fired me for being too slow. The second job the owner would not train me, I was still attending school, and expected me to do the job and if I made a mistake he would yell and throw stuff at me, so not very good experiences. I have a total of 10 months experience but I can't get hired anywhere in this field. They all want I-Car trained people, so how do I become I-Car trained? I pretty much know the repair procedures, except for frame work, but I don't have the experiecne.

You are not going to be a frame tech without years of experience so I would not be too concerned about that. You will need to start as a helper willing to do whatever needed or asked by the shop owner or manager. You can get your I-Car training by visiting www.I-car.com. From there you can you can enter your zip code to find the closest training and time.

Here a few more websites for you to check out to learn more about a collision repair career.

LAB has the best advice. Start as a helper, that is your best recourse. ICAR certs are definitely needed for the evolving industry, and are respected in the primo shops. The challenge of repairing newer vehicles has increased, so education is a must.
