I have a 2000 tahoe that is making a dragging noise slimular to a brake shoe dragging. I have replaced the brakes and noise did not stop. Noise has worsened but is still intermitant. Mechanic says coming from transfer case. He estimates 2500.00 to replace. Is there any other posible solutions to try before replacing the case? Thanks

the transfercase has a drain and fill plug...has your mechanic drained some of this fluid [since hes looking to take 2500 from you ] to determine the transfercase condition ...also did he gather the OEM GM SPECIFIC dtc failure codes from the drivetrain ?
the transfercase if it is in need of replacement or re-build will have a very dark black fluid color ...the color of the fluid is blue normally..
when black this indicates that the clutches have been destroyed..
this is part time 4WD ,,no operation in any 4WD position on dry solid pavement...this along with different sized /wear in the tires does destroy these drive trains...
If you know nothing about this go to another shop that is familiar with these vehicles any pay him to properly diagnose the problem...
