flashing off light

Hi, I have a 1999 ford e-150 conversion van by explorer. It has a 4-6 v-8 motor. Problem I'm having is on the gear shift lever there is a word/light that says off. The word off flashes when I accelarate, and slow down. The rest of the time its fine. Anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks.:dunno:
