fuel pump

I just bought a 2005 Lasabre and it seems that the fuel pump is awful noisey and vibrates the car. Is this a sign that it is on it's way out. Car has 66,000 miles on it.
Thanks for any insight on this. I am leaving on a trip in two days and I dont want to be stranded on the road.

Are you sure it's the fuel pump? I don't think a fuel pump has enough mass to vibrate the car.

Are you sure it is the fuel pump, or could it be the air pump for the struts? (If you have ELC) Usually, a noisy fuel pump indicates that it's life is limited. If you make a trip before replacing it, be sure to have emergency towing insurance, or AAA. The last one I had fail made noise for several months before failure; however, you never know when it will fail!

I dont know if it has ELC or not. The sound is coming from the right rear so it might be that. I suspect the fuel pump would be in the middle of the car. I will have to check further. Like I said I just got it today and am not familiar with it at all.

A quick way to check is turn off all accessories. Then turn the key to OFF and then to ON. Listen. You'll hear the fuel pump "purr" for about 2 seconds as it primes the system then turns off.

If you leave the key ON for a minute and get out of the car and stand by the rear of the car, after 30 seconds to 40 seconds you'll hear the air leveling pump prime the system for the rear struts. It will run for 3-5 seconds. It makes a sound just like a cheap air pump for your tires that I bought at Harbor Freight for $10.

I hope this can help you distinguish the two sounds.

If the loud air pump continues to run, then you may have a leak in an air line to the rear struts or within a strut itself.
