Transmisson / Cranking Problem

I have a 99 automatic vw beetle drove it to the gas station fine and turned it off with no problems. When I tried to crank it back up the gear shifter is in park but on the dash it says its in neutral then it shifts over to drive and car wont start. When I put the gear shifter in 3, 2, or 1st it shows up and then shifts back into drive on the dash when I have the key turned over. My brake light on the gear shifter goes off when i turn the key over without me even touching the brake. Please help don't know what it could be!

Take to dealer for the brake light switch recall at no cost to you. Should fix your issues.
