I have a 97 avalon with a problem, I have heard from other owners, it happens when you are in drive or park and not moving with your foot on the brake or in park off the brake, but if you shift into netrual it goes away... The noise I would describe it as is a ever so slight repetitive bumping noise an example would be if you had someting in your tire it made the same noise on every rotation, you could not hear it with the radio up but with it quiet you can. I suspect it has something to to with the tranny, maybe the torque converter or the fluid needs changed this only happens when stopped, their is no shifting problems or take off from a dead stop problem of any, please help if you can :banghead:

Since you're asking a vehicle-specific question did you search the Avalon forum for the issue?
Was the '97 Avalon prone to sludging like the Camry was several years ago? Does the noise get louder if you remove the oil fill cap temporarily?

I have posted this problem as a replay in the toyota fourm because another guy had the same problem. I am very well mechanicaly inclinded and know of the sluging problem. I belive this is a tranny problem and not an engine problem due to the fact that it is located around what postion the shifter is in when the noise accures. I am gonaa change the filter and fluid and go fron there unless someone knows the problem
