radiators

Any info on scratchbuilding radiators?:confused:

I would start with some ridged styrene sheet and then add some styrene strips as necessary until the desired effect is achieved. Google radiator images could potentially come in handy for this project. :)

What type of radiator are you trying to make? What level of detail and how scratchbuilt are you trying to do? What raw materials are you going to use?

That radiator is scratchbuilt, sort of. I started with the radiator out of the Fujimi Integra kit, which I made a rubber mold of one side of. I then made two copies of the one side of the radiator that had the texture I wanted. I sanded the backs of the new resin parts until they were thin enough to glue back to back. The top and bottom tanks were cut out of sheet styrene and glued to the top and bottom of the radiator. I used straight pins cut to length for the attachment points on the top tank. I used photoetch from Detail Master for the radiator cap, and also one of their PE wingnuts from their battery detail set glued to the end of a short length of plastic rod for the drain petcock. Since I was making a model of an aluminum aftermarket radiator, I used some PE welds that I found in the armor section of my LHS for the welds around the radiator at the tanks.

The fan is also mostly detail master parts, with a scratchbuilt shroud. I lastly drilled holes in the appropriate places in the top and bottom tanks for the hoses, which will be made from Detail Master hose.

I don't know what you're doing, but I hope this gives you an idea. I couldn't fathom actually making the finned sections of the radiator from scratch - that's why I copied that texture out of another kit.

Perhaps a fine PE mesh, or a fine wire screen for the textures on both sides? I think someone even makes PE radiator facing.

Shoot, for a vette, you could probably just easily get away with finding some old radiators out of your parts box or other kits and cut it to fit. There are lots of kits out there that have really nice rad. detail.

Detail Master's photo-etched Radiator Face? All you have to do is to cut it to the desired size. A similar product is available from KA Models and Crazy Modeler, as well.
