2004 Venture Running Rough

A few months ago our van started running hot off and on, it seemed the waterpump was leaking. We changed it and all was well. The check engine light came on one day after my husband jump started his suburban with the van. Nothing seemed wrong with it when we drove it. 2 weeks ago it started running hot one night, the heater went cold and when we checked the radiator fluid it was cold after driving it for 30 minutes. We just had the thermostat changed in it and the temperature is fine. Now it is running rough... what could that indicate? The mechanic said he didn't see any engine damage from it running hot the few minutes it was running while it was in the red area. He didn't see any gasket leaks on the engine or anything like that. Any ideas?:headshake

Let me add now it is running hot off and on again. Drove about 15 min and it started it again. Whenever it starts running hot (the temp gets right before the red line and then starts going back down) the heater blows cold. As soon as the temp starts going down the heater starts blowing hot again.

Head gaskets? Check oil and coolant for combustion gasses.

Mechanic says he checked everything for head gaskets and said everything looked good. It seems the fans are not working properly so husband is taking it back up there now to have them checked

The fans dont usually run on the hwy. The fans on mine turn on at pretty high temp (235*) Bad fan wont cause the heat to dissappear. You could have air in the coolant system tho..

Ok, the most recent news.....

When the gauge says it's hot, on the redline, the engine is only approximately 175 degrees. The waterpump is the hottest part of the engine when this is going on. So, the mechanic is thinking that Napa gave us the wrong waterpump when we replaced it a few months ago and that this waterpump is actually turning the wrong way and sucking the water out of the engine. So, he is going to replace the waterpump and see what happens.
BTW, the fans are working just fine. They kick on when they are suppose to and everything.
