As Volkswagon continues to venture onto uncharted automobile territory, they cannot exclude the exotic car segment. Unfortunately for most automakers, this elite niche on the boardwalk calls for intense power and massively high-performance engines as a prerequisite. Fortunately for VW, their new 'W' motor configuration spent much R&D time as larger displacement engines, to see if the new compacting design could yield V-12 power for V-6 size. The result was a W-12 (W-8 on its way in Passats and others) which will be equipped on the VW's upcoming 7-series fighter, the D1 flagship. More on the "show-the-public-what-we-can-do" side, VW worked up a concept exercise, simply dubbed, VW W12 Coupe. Also fitted with the W-12 powerplant, an exotic like this with german craftsmanship could prove to be heavy competition for Italy's marques.

And their vast empire continues to grow...

The juice. 6.0 liter W-12 produces 600 horses and pushes the 2640 pound car to 217 mph at top speed, and from 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. These numbers will result in the title of 'fastest production supercar' currently being made. Of course, the Lamborghini Murcielago was just released...

This car reminds me of that Maclaran F1 thingy. I just want those seats in my Jetta that would be dope. It's a whole new spin on VW's thoguh. To tell the truth I don't really like it. Don't get me wrong it is one beautiful car. I love the cock pit. But for some reason I've just fallen in love with the regular semi boxy look of the former VW's. Peace

I guess Piech wanted VW to grow up from those "regular semi boxy" looking cars. They refined the Passat, and even designed that D1 full size luxury sedan (which seems to be on the rocks with engine choice and weight matters). Bernd Piscetstrieder is up to bat next and maybe we will see some more of the traditional fun compacts that VW are known well for (or just bring some over from Europe), while keeping the new big cars.

I really like the car. I can't wait until the car is produced and driven. I want to see the perfomance numbers on that bad boy. It's sweet.:)

Where is that track?

Morpheus XIII

Is that where the term Nardi spawns from, or is that something else? Reminds me of the whole MOMO thing (Monza/Modena). MOMO is still a funny sounding name.

VW_Redliner
12-26-2001, 01:47 AM
Why is MOMO so popular. It's the most expensive ugly ass car mods I've ever seen. Why would I 300 dollars for a steering wheel. Just because is says MOMO. F that. MOMO is dumb.

Morpheus XIII
12-26-2001, 11:24 PM
It's because MOMO has close ties with Ferrari. I think most of their stuff is made in Italy too, where everything seems to be expensive.

So why is VW so popular? You can spend less money on a Seat Leon and still get the same package as a Golf. That makes no sense either, right?

Morpheus XIII
12-28-2001, 03:37 PM
It's the look, I guess. Too bad we only get the VWs. Would be nice to see a Cupra running around here.

VW is so popular because of the look. You can be more creative than you can with a honda or acura ugly POS. Those car have no origanality. I don't think I would ever own one just because everyone seems to have one. People are getting into VW so much now I don't know what kind of car I'll drive. VW let's you go faster than a honda and look good doin it. VW owners feel good about their car no matter what. I love my VW. I wouldn't trade it for a brand new RSX or Civic Si ever. Dub for life!!! Heres my Dub. I know it's not much but I love it!!!

Sorry man, but just can't agree with that. Sure VW's are good cars, but i wouldn't buy it for the looks.....

VW_Redliner

well I would be I like the engines too. VWs kill those honda rice boys.

Da Hawxxx
12-29-2001, 10:35 AM
Hmmmmm..... engines aren't that strong.... BMW 6 IL are much better, diesels are powerful but not that refined like the Alfa's or Peugeots

VW_Redliner
12-29-2001, 03:40 PM
BMW is a whole new ball game bro. Bimmers can desimate all VW's I know this my neighbor builds them for racing. The point I'm makine I guess is that VW's are better than Acuras and Hondas. They look nicer and go faster. When you get into the European stuff like Alpha and all those other ones. VW doesn't even exsist. BMW is a great company. That is my dream to own a BMW but I can't afford it. I'm 17 years old. I make like 7.50 an hour. I couldn't afford the issurance if I had a car payment. But Conparing VW to those cheap ricers, VW is way better.

Morpheus XIII

Yeah, although BMW makes damn fine cars, only the M3 models have a serious international following. Volkswagon makes several of these cult classics.

VW_Redliner
01-03-2002, 01:12 AM
You're right I guess. The M3 is where most of the hype is at. although the 325ci is a way more affordable car for suping up. VW makes going fast more affordable.

Your're in the wrong place to say that. Plus you know that VW have way more power and potential!!!

Da Hawxxx

So if BMW is a whole new ballgame, why you're comparing Honda to VW?

VW_Redliner
01-05-2002, 08:16 PM
Well, Honda and VW are more of a realitstic comparison. I would never buy a Honda because I think they're ugly and slow. That's my opinion but VW is a better type of car. They're are way cheaper too. Easier to work on. The lists is long. I know a few guys that are into Hondas but they say if they had the chance to go back and buy that jetta or golf when they bought their first honda they would. I think that's pretty funny.

Da Hawxxx
01-06-2002, 05:07 PM
I guess you're comparing the previous generation to honda's, that's a fair comparison. cause back then, here in europe, the main competion of VW was Opel/Vauxhall, Peugeot, Renault and others... but now with the new generation of VW's, they are focusing on BMW's and Merc's trying to share the same level as Audi, look at Nardo ( W12 ) new Phaeton, Tuared and the Passat W8. That's why i find it odd, you compared them to honda.

VW_Redliner
01-06-2002, 11:48 PM
I live in the states. I see lots of hondas every day. Most of my friends have them. I know in Europe the VW's are way faster better cars. Here they made them wussy cars. We have so high of an emisions standard. It's not as bad as California but it's bad. My Jetta won't pass it. That's way I have to spend a certain amount of money on it at a certified place every two years. You're right about Europe but we don't have Opel and all the rest of the pack. Vw's and Honda's are the closest compared. But Vw's are fast and I think they look way better.

Morpheus XIII
01-08-2002, 02:46 AM
Perhaps, we don't get the cream of the crop, but U.S. VWs are getting way faster. The New Beetle Turbo S seems almost ludicrous, but it's just a statement that VW intends to beef up all of their cars.

VW_Redliner
01-08-2002, 02:43 PM
Vw's are getting better. I wish the US did not have the standards that it has. They are rediculious and stupid. They worry about pollution and tell me my car isn't worth driving because it can't pass. What about all the trains and planes and shit. The hybrids are coming but not with the power the gear heads desire.

Last night I say a 280hp hybrid. 200hp was electric and the 80 was deisel. That's pretty cool. It was very exotic looking and was said to be about to compete with Ferrari. The car was a two seater (very small too) and had a mid-range drivetrain. :sun:

Pretty dope if you ask me!
:bandit:

Probably way expensive too... it's too bad we live in a period of transition when the world will be changing to alternative fuel sources--brand new technology means mad cost.

yeah cliff, what are you thinking!

I like vw's, but I don't think I'd buy one..whatever. I will school you in a race anyday :D

Morph your exactly right. But the cost will decrease of a few years. It does on anything that can be bought. That's the way it goes. But if they don't make it affordable there is no reason to try to switch over. If the majority can't afford the new cars then it really doesn't matter you know?

Chris if I knew how to drive as well as you it would never happen. You know that. You also know that my car has way more torque than your car. Once I get my car in a better running condition...no mods. I meant when it runs better I will race you. On the track foo.

[I'm deleting my original message and writing this]:

Ok cliff  you can stop freaking out about your internet reputation. I was being sarcastic. just stop going around and talking like your car is the fastest thing on earth, or that it will be once it runs good. you me and lewis need to race at this one strip of road sometime..good stuff.

On October 14th a prototype of Volkswagen's new W12 Coupe in the final stages of development set the world speed record for distance covered in "24 hours". The 440 kW/600 bhp twelve-cylinder sports car covered 7,085.7 kilometres (4,402.8 miles) at an average speed of 295.24 km/h (183.45 mph). It thus toppled the previous record by a margin of twelve km/h (7.5 mph). In the Volkswagen W12 Coupe capable of 350 km/h (217 mph), which had not been specially prepared for the long-distance record bid, the team of drivers also set two other world records (over 5,000 kilometres and 5,000 miles) and six international vehicle class records. The class record for "12 hours" had already been broken in a trial run.

All world and class records are subject to recognition by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA); therefore the record-breaking drives on the high-speed circuit at Nardo near Lecce in southern Italy were carried out in accordance with the official FIA regulations. The aim of putting the vehicle through this gruelling 24-hour ordeal was to analyse the performance potential and the robustness of the twelve-cylinder engine. As can be seen from the remarkable records and the first technical analyses of the drive unit, an ideal set of the results was achieved, exceeding the defined requirements.

Volkswagen is showing the original record-breaking vehicle and a possible production version of this concept will be making its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show from October 24th to November 7th. Before then, however, the twelve-cylinder engine will be put to use from spring 2002 in the in the new luxury saloon from Volkswagen, internally know as Project D1. In this case the 6.0-litre engine will produce 309 kW / 420 bhp.
