2001 sonoma 4/4 not working

When i try to enguage the 4 wheel in hi or lo all that happens is i hear a click up fron but nothing enguages, please help any suggestions would be appriciated

What transfer case.
STD or AUTO4W button on shifting panel?
Any lights flashing or on?
Does front drive shaft lock in?

Its the electronic buttons on the dashboard,the lights flash for about half a second then stays lit up, and thats on hi n lo i dont beleive the front drivshaft locks in because i was stuck in the snow and the front wheels wouldnt spin at all

233 or the AUTO4W?
Have you felt the drive shaft for locking in?

i havent felt the driveshaft ill try that n keep u posted. How can i tell the differance between the 223 and the AUTO4W? I can get underthere and look but im really not sure how to tell the differance

The Automatic 4W has the Auto4W button on it.
On back of transfer case there is a ID tag.
For a 233 you can ground pin 13 and get codes.
The Auto4W requires a transmission/transfer case scanner to test and get code.

thank you that was deff helpfull but theres about a foot of snow outside so i cant get under there at the moment, do yoounthink this could be an issue of low fluid? i just bought the truck and i have a warrenty but its a $250 deducable and i was just trying to save somr money if possible

Fluid level should always be checked.
What transfer case do you have?
Any transfer case codes?
