New Starter Bad?

I have a 97 Silverado 4x4. 5.7L 1500. The old starter would on occasion grind on the first turn over, so I decided to replace it. It's been about a week sense I replaced it, and the new one is grinding much worse than the old one ever did when it did not start, and when it finally does start it doesn't sound good at all. Several people have given me possible solutions

A: Flywheel damage. If this how do I see all of the flywheel?
B: Need to shim the starter for better angle or spacing. If this then why was it okay for a week?
C: Could this possibly be the wrong starter, there were 2 different ones based on the alternator that is on the truck.
D: Your suggestion?

Please help, I'm a college guy that needs his truck! Thanks in advance!

Did you get the right one?
Grinding is not good.
Pull starter or splash cover and check flywheel teeth.
If bad you will need a new flywheel.
Let us know what you find there.

I checked what I could see of the flywheel. I don't know how to spin it? It didn't look chipped or worn. I'm assuming they gave me the correct one. Could it just be a faulty starter? Keep in mind it was good for a week. It also didn't seem to be as strong as the old one if that matters, like it doesn't just start right up, it takes a second with this one.

You have 2 choices.
Bad flywheel or starter.
Was it a cheap or good starter?
Try another starter under starter warranty.
Let us know if that helps.

If splash cover is off you can grab flywheel teeth and spin engine over to check teeth all of the way around.

Or put a 5/8 socket on end of crank shaft bolt and turn engine over.

Cheap Starter, so I will try the easy fix first.

I only show one starter for it.

For long lasting flywheels.
Best to use the good grade starters.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
