There are two clips at the back of the headlight assembly, pull them straight up to release the locking pins.

Usually you have to remove the grill. I have a 97 Jimmy SLE and recently changed my headlights as well. There are 3 screws that hold my grill on to the front of the vehicle. The first two are under the hood where the hood and grill meet. The remaining screw is visible inside the grill in front of the radiator. Once these screws are removed, there are several clips holding the grill on. You should be able to pull the grill free of these clips if you have removed all the necessary screws. I could not access the headlight assembly at all without removing the grill but once I did the bulbs were easy to remove without removing the headlight assembly. They simply twist out of a socket on the back of the headlight assembly. This is not the case for all models however so you may have a slightly different configuration. I hope this helps.
