I'm looking for some advice. I am planning on replacing my struts for the 1st time 187,000 miles on the Van. I would prefer not to go with the ready-replace units (complete with springs mounts etc) and just replace the actual strut itself and reuse as many of the old parts... mounts, bellows, jounce bumper etc. as possible in order to keep the costs in line. Complete units seem to run $200-225 and just the strut $50.
I know that this involves compressing the spring etc. I'm not really worried about that I have a compressor set and I've done it before. What I am wondering is...
1. do I really need new top strut mounts...seems like they run another $40 each can I re-use the old ones?
2. is there a lower spring plate or anything like that will need to be replaced.
3. Re-use the old bellows and jounce bumper?
4. How worn would the old outer suspension spring be..I think reusing it should be fine.
Any input is welcome.
Thanks

I replaced the struts (front ) on my '96 at 123,00 miles, and did struts only, nothing else. So far so good, be careful to index the cam bolt for re-installation or you will probably need an alignment.

replace the struts and bearings and you should be good...
