Only goes one way. If the timing mark is at 0, the rotor will point either straight up or straight down.

It is the end of the quarter and I had to get my Chemistry class final exam set up, grade everything
to get it back to the students.
Plus the new quarter is about here and I have to get all those classes set up to teach...
and the weather has been crappy.
I think that tomorrow I can get back to THE PHOENIX and get her running.
I found my Chilton Manual under a bunch of crap and consulted the wiring setup for the Distributor.
Then I remembered how screwed up it is.
http://alkaspace.com/usr/3754/Chiltons_Diagra.jpg
If the firing order is 1 - 3 - 2 , then how can the Distributor have the wiring
setup shown in the Chilton Manual ?
That is 1 - 2 - 3 !
So I found my old photo from the original rebuild and now I am set for tomorrow.

The car is not screwed up, Chilton is. You need to start a nice fire in your fireplace with any Chilton or Haynes manuals you might happen to have lying around. Get a real manual!

the firing order is right but the pic is wrong, they have the CCW rotation right too

Something is wrong !....or is it ?
I was all set to hook up the Distributor.
The engine was rotated with the plugs out to TDC (Zero on the mark).
Used a stick to show Number One Piston at TDC.
http://alkaspace.com/usr/3754/Set_to_No_1_TDC.jpg
The Distributor Rotor should then be pointing to the Number One Spark Plug Tower on the Distributor Cap.
It is not !
http://alkaspace.com/usr/3754/Not_Aligned_Rig.jpg
Now what ? The rotor points between 2 and 3 plug wires when it should be pointing to Number one's wire...
Did the Head Rebuilding Shop put the Camshaft back in incorrectly ?
Or - do I put the wires on differently now ?
Not sure what is going on here......why is this happening ?

crankshaft turns twice for one revolution of the camshaft, turn the crankshaft 1 more revolution and try distributor again or just put distributor in, its fine since it can only go in one way, your just not on the compression stroke of #1 cyl, needs one more turn of crank for that

You guys who KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING must get quite a laugh at my ignorance !
Lord...what a putz I am.
I rotated the Main pulley (had to use a Rubber Strap Wrench) 360° and Number one
came back to TDC on the mark.
The Distributor Rotor was now straight up !
Put the plugs back in, wired it as shown before.
Numbered the Distributor Cap so I wouldn't forget...
http://alkaspace.com/usr/3754/Distributor_Lab.jpg
THE PHOENIX lives again !
Started right up !
Whew....I was sweating that !
All is well.
Now I will time it to 10° BTDC with my timing light on #1 plug wire - have to find that
diagram of how to short out the Computer timing input on that plug at the right driver's
side while timing it.
Can't find where the shorting wire goes....so I timed it w/o that.
Was at 20° BTDC - adjusted it to 10° BTDC.
Then make sure the oil and coolant are up to the marks - and drive her....
I want to torque the Head Bolts at maybe 100 miles or so.
No "Break In", as it were, since only the Head was worked on.

Setting the timing with the jumper shorted is kind of important. The computer bumps the timing up pretty high at idle otherwise. So you've retarded it more than it should be.

The second pic shows the underhood sticker and which pins to jump. Bottom row, left-most two if you're looking at the connector with its tab on top.

I got tired of trying to find a diagram or photo of that freaking Diagnostic Plug
and where one is supposed to jumper it, so I posted a pic of it on this Forum.

Now folks don't have to wonder if they are doing it right....

I just said that at the top of this page, "the rotor will point either straight up or straight down".
After you finish carefully following the instructions about ignition timing, throw the book and the jumper in the trash then turn it clockwise a quarter inch or so. Our engines run much better with 10 degrees advance. More power, better mileage, less carbon soot in the EGR and exhaust pipe, and longer exhaust valve life.

" Can't find where the shorting wire goes....so I timed it w/o that.
Was at 20° BTDC - adjusted it to 10° BTDC." I remembered what you said before !
Will drive it to work today - hope nothing goes wrong - about 70 miles round trip.
Need to buy some new Battery Cables - the old bolts on the old cables are corroded shut.
Can't put in my new battery.
Wal-Mart sells nice ones for $10 each - but I have to know the LENGTH of each.
Does anyone know how long the Ground and the Positive cables are ?
The Positive cable disappears underneath the battery.
