I have a 2000 ls sport and the speedometer doesen't always work it stays on zero and then it works it happens more when it's cold any help would be great thanks

Does your ABS work fine, or is the ABS light on as well? I believe the vehicle speed signal is sourced from the ABS system. The speedometer is electronic, the problem is likely in the meter head itself. You might be able to clean and use a light weight oil to lubricate the mechanicals of it. For some reason I'm struggling to find the details on where the signal is sourced from in the service manual.

The Vehicle Speed Signal comes from the ABS controller. It generates the signal by averaging the four wheel speed signals.

On gen II, there are two specific VS signals from the ABS controller that are the normal squarewave pulse waveform. These connect to the rear park assist, and to the factory navigation. For everything else, including the speedometer, the speed is sent as a digital message on the CAN bus.

I'm not sure how gen I does it, but it is probably similar. I would say that if you aren't getting a check engine light, then the instrument cluster itself is probably at fault. Does the odometer continue to count up the miles when the speedometer isn't working?

-Rodyes the abs and the traction control light is on and i just check with a trouble code tester and i showed a right front senser not working could that be causing the speedometer problem

Yes, that could cause the problem. In some of the earlier Fords (such as the Taurus) with ABS the vehicle speed was derived from a single wheel speed sensor, not averaged from all four. Yours might be one that uses only the right front wheel speed for the speedometer.

-Rodok i checked the wire coming out of the hub and the plug and all seems to be good could the tone ring in side not be working is ther any way of removing the cover or do i need a new hub thanks

It could be the tone ring or the sensor, and don't forget the wire between the sensor and the ABS control unit. What was the precise B code from the scan tool? If you have access to an oscilloscope you could check the output from the sensor to see if you are getting a flat line or if you are getting a squarewave with a missing or wider than usual low. A flat line would suggest a sensor or wire issue, an issue with the pulse(s) would suggest a tone ring. If you have the original style hub you could likely get away wire replacing just the sensor, the newer style hub would require a hub if either are bad. There's no good way to replace just the tone ring with either setup.

I had saved the sensor from my wife's 2002 when I replaced the hub, I'll check to see if I threw it out after she got rid of her car. If I still have it, you'd be welcome to it for the cost of shipping. The hub was replaced due to a bad ball joint, not because of an ABS issue.

-Rodok now i am gettig a lot of codes C1233,C1145,C1234,C1236,C1235,C1289 all wheel sensor codes what might cause this and for a second the odometer and miles had all dashes i turned off the car and turned it back on and odometer and mileage went back to normal i need some help thanks
