I recently changed my fuel pump and everything went well but then when I went to the gas station to fill up, my gas guage stayed on Empty..

So anytime I put gas in it still says Empty

I didnt feel like getting back under there right away so I stuck it out but I got tired of running out of gas so much.

Today my buddy and I decided to trouble shoot, WE pulled the tank down again and pulled the pump out of the tank and made sure the floater wasnt stuck on anything and I even turned on the truck and moved the floater up and down to make sure it worked, it did. We carefully put everything back in and once we were done, We drove to the gas station and put gas in.. guess what?? We were still on E..

Im starting to think my floater just doesnt float anymore.

What should I do now?

Please help, I cant afford to put it in the shop but I cant afford to keep running out of gas either!

Why don't you just use the trip odometer?

Assuming that the wires are connected correctly to the sender, if you want to drop the tank again, you can test by connecting the wires while the sender is out of the tank (likely there is a ground wire in the connection but if not ground the sender mounting metal to good chassis ground), and move the float through the positions to see if the gauge changes readings. There may be a contact arm that can be bent slightly to make better contact against the little resistance wires coil.

You could also remove the sending unit completely and check resistance with an ohmmeter as you move the float.

Be aware that the sending unit is 2 to 2.5 times the cost of the fuel pump.

with the floater moving up and down and the ignition switch on no engine running you should be able to test this...

usually this is the intank pick up resistor..but with this vehicle it could be wiring ..
