A little more information is needed on your G6 like the trim line ie:base model, V6, GT or GTP. Also any other symptoms or noises to go along with the "Power Steering" message on the DIC. A quick guess without any further information would leave me to suspect the control unit for the electric power steering (which is more then likely what you have) is not working properly and needs to be serviced. It could be somehting as simple as a loose connection to something more severe like it needing to be replaced.

From what i hear...power steering problems are fairly common on the G6? The steering was making a clunking noise on our G6 a while back...it ended up being the steering knuckle, i guess they had to grease it?

king of off topic here, but...i have not been under this car enough to look around in detail. the car currently has just about 32K on it so the 3 year 36K warranty will be up soon and i will be working on the car whenever needed. do you know if this "steering knuckle" has a grease fitting on it? or how in the world did they "grease" it?

I'm not sure how they "grease" it honestly... but i do know that only the newer 08+ g6's can be greased. the 05-07 cannot be greased. Unfortunetly you are correct that the g6 is plagued with steering issues. It just depends on which issue you will get. I had the clunk due to the tie rods but never had the steering column or knuckle issues that others had. I did have my power steering pump go out on my but mine had an actually pump not the electric power steering like the othe rmodels.

The motor is sold as a complete unit with the module. It would be unwise to start replacing parts. A scanner is required to get into the system to see what's happening. Even if you replace the motor, you need the scanner to calibrate steering wheel center.

Now it looks lik G.M. has issued a recall on this problem.

the last i saw the recall only affects the G5 and the colbalt, not the G6. Maybe eventually they'll recall the 6's for the steering issue and tie rod ends.
