2001 Alero strut question

My 2001 Alero needs a new drivers side front strut. I push down on the front passenger side and the front end rebounds nicely, yet on the driver's side nothing happens. My question is, would I need to replace just the strut cartridge, or would I have to replace the entire strut assembly? In other words, is it more common to replace the cartridge, or the entire assembly? A strut cartridge will run me $70 at AutoZone, whereas an entire strut assembly will cost $230, so I really need an answer before I go spending my money.

sounds like the l/f strut is seized. you can change just the strut. as long as the upper bearing and spring seat and spring are in good condition. It is recommended to change struts in pairs so you have even damping rates.

If I had no access to a spring compressor the entire assembly option would be easier and safer but alas more expensive.

There are some fantastic internet video's of people changing struts without a strut compressor and almost removing themselves from the gene pool.
