Camry Fuel mileage

I bought a 2010 4cyl Camry back in August 09 during the cash for clunkers program.My wife loves the car and it's Ok for me(Ford lover).
My problem is poor fuel mileage,13 to 17 MPG city driving with about 4,000 on the clock.Dealer says will improve with break in after 5,000 miles.I find that hard to believe.I've got a 93 Grand Marquise with 100k that get 20 and better combo hwy/city driving.
I'm just curious what other Camry drivers are getting as far as fuel mileage goes.My car is rated at 32 hwy and I think 28mpg city.I feel it should do better then 20mpg city driving.

Yes, your mileage is poor. We have an 07 4 cylinder with the 2.4 liter 2AZ engine. Your car has the newer 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine. Your city mileage should be rated at something like 22 MPG, not 28. We get about 22 MGP this time of the year in suburban Chicago driving. If we do mostly short trip driving it can fall to around 19 MPG in these cold temperatures. Realistically, your mileage should be around there, maybe a mile or two more. Your mileage should improve slightly after 5,000 miles as the dealer stated, but not that much. I would stay on top of your dealer and make sure your mileage complaints are documented. If you don't feel your dealer is taking you seriously, give Toyota corporate a call at 1-800-331-4331 and speak to cutomer service about the low fuel mileage. You want to make sure this is all documented, in case there is a real problem.

One problem I can see is that you can get almost any gas mileage in the city, below the rated mileage. It is totally dependent on your driving habits and your locale. How is your highway mileage? If that is in line with expectations, it may be that your or your wife's in-city driving habits or your locale are wasteful of gasoline in some way.

If you drive very gently in the city to save gas, take a drive with your wife at the wheel and evaluate her driving habits without her knowledge. Some people get bad habits in one car, such as riding the brake pedal or eratic acceleration, that they don't previously have in other cars.

All in all, you will have a hard time proving to the dealer's satisfaction that the poor mileage is the fault of the car and not your driving habits. If someone in your family drives poorly in the city, your mileage can be ridiculously bad.

If you are satisfied that your driving habits are not the problem, you can check here (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/) occasionally for TSBs related to bad gasoline mileage in your vehicle. If there is a known problem with your vehicle, it may be solved (such as reprogramming the ECM) and a TSB may have been issued to your dealer. You can then bring the TSB to your dealer - providing him with proof that the problem has a solution he can impliment.

Daniel M. Dreifus has a good point. If your only in-city driving are short trips, then you may get really bad mileage.

Very short trips...2-3 miles max with no speeds above 25-30. The O2 sensors are likely internally heated so will be ready to go to closed loop quickly, but the ECT will probably keep things open loop until it begins to heat up, which takes a few minutes of driving. Any less than that and you'll remain in open loop for the entire trip.

Worse if you live in a really cold area (Upper NY?)

Yes it is getting up to operating temp.The dealer now two times has said they can find nothing wrong with the car since it has no codfes and that it need to break in.It will be going in for service in 2 weeks and I will see what they have to say again.

Check it out next time on a long trip to see if you can get ~ 32 mpg (doing like 65 mph, not 85 mph), which I what I can get out of mine. If that is the case, then it is most likely poor driving habits causing the low mileage.

Could also be a brake problem... Maybe one of your brakes is not releasing totally.

Definitely not a good mileage. I had an old Camry before and it runs around 33 miles on highway.
