'04 Door check replacement

For almost a year my left rear door became increasingly harder to open and close until one day it opened but would not close. The door check, the arm that prevents the door from opening too far had separated and wouldn't retract back into the door. I was away from home so proceeded to force it closed, crushing it. I picked up the new part this afternoon from the dealer for a grand total of $15.87. Replacement took about an hour including the time it took to figure out how to get the door panel off. I figure it will take me about 30 minutes the next time. Yes, the right rear side has started to rust and separate.
Here's how I did it (sorry, forgot to bring the camera out with me, maybe when I do the other one). I found a lot of this info online but figured this would be a good place for it as well, especially if I can get pictures on the next one.
First I removed the black trim piece above the door panel toward the rear (not sure if this was necessary). This was simply a matter of prying it off. This whole procedure was a little nerve racking, prying off plastic pieces in below freezing temperatures. Next I removed the plug and screw from the door handle. Then the screw inside the round door lever. Next were the two screws at the bottom of the panel. Next was removal of the round black plastic piece around the door lever. Pry under the plastic ring starting at 9 o'clock. While prying I also pushed in on the door panel. Next comes the window crank since I don't have power windows. With the crank in the 6 o'clock position, push in on the panel to give some slack and you can see the retaining clip. I was able to push down on the two ends of the clip, one at a time working it off. This took a little patience and the clip flew off so be careful. Luckily my wife was holding the light and saw where it landed. The crank simply pulls of. Pry out the panel starting at the bottom. Once it is free lift it up and it should come off. Next carefully pull away the plastic sheeting covering the door. Now you can remove the two 10mm (i think) bolts from the door side and the 12mm from the frame side. Install the new check and test the operation. re-install in reverse order. Putting the clip back on the window crank was a little tricky. It flew away a couple of times.

Thanks for the excellent step by steps to replace the door check. Most people post only when they need help. Not many supply answers to problems they've solved. All of the forums go into a searchable data base. I'm sure your advice will help someone else. I commend you hayesbcajh. Dave
