99 ga no codes on computer

at first i thought the passlock was the problem. but the security light is solid, then is off after trying to crank. reset has never done any good. anyway, i plugged an obd II computer into cars computer and it shows no fault codes. i expected at least a maf error since it is unplugged, but nothing. shows coolant temp, timing etc. could the computer itself be bad? there is definately a crank no start situation, i would expect that in its self to throw a code. any ideas would be appreciated.:runaround:

i think its not a security problem...let me know. turn the key on and all lights are solid, including security (not flashing). crank engine...no start, but security light goes out. my guess would be a crank sensor, but once again...there are no fault codes.:banghead:

don't know what you have for a scan tool but I have found that some readers cannot read manufacturer specific codes. May not be the case with your obdII computer. The theft deterent codes for this car are manufacturer specific codes and will be in bcm not powertrain. They will be b2XXX or b3XXX with the x's changing according the the specific code. Can you communicate with the bcm with your scan tool?

I do know that theft deterrent for this car will shut down the fuel injectors so if your getting injector pulse during crank; I would suspect engine controls not theft deterrent.

can you view injector pulse width with your scan tool...would that be a quick way to check for injector pulse?

In response to the previous post for crank signal; if you can see rpm with your scan tool you crank signal is there.

This system does not have a pellet resistor in the key right? If it does you would see a square cut out in the metal part of the key with a resistor pressed into it?

just read my own post...sorry wasn't much help

it is normal to see all those lights, that is so you can verify that your bulbs work. However, they should turn off after 3 sec. Agree with consultIII that if your scanner is cheap it will not read B codes. But yes theft system disables injectors.

need more info. Do you hear starter cranking the engine? If not do you hear starter solenoid click?

yes engine cranks...no start. dont know name of obd II program (buddies), assume it is fairly cheap ($85) this is a 9/98 grand am se 2.4L. parts cross as a 99 model. no pellet, it has hall effect switch. but i do believe passlock disables fuel/fire. if the security light stayed on after attempt to start, i would be more suspicious of anti-theft. but i am not sure. thats why i am here. i cannot locate a tap on fuel rail for pressure guage, and plugs are under cover, so i dont know how to check for fire. i have downloaded the pontiac shop manual, but it requires special hardware to trigger components. any other test approaches would be very appreciated.

theft deterrent for this car will only disable fuel injector pulse. You will have fuel pressure and spark even if it is in theft mode. If you could rule out theft codes you wouldn't need to do the next step. Seeing as you can't do that check for injector pulse with a noid light on the fuel injector connector. If it flashes during crank it is not a anti-theft issue.

In the absence of a scan tool; regardless if its anti theft or not you need fuel, compression and spark at the right time to start the engine so check them all and see what's not there.

I've just read the theft deterent operation in the service manual.
there are 2 modes of operation:

1. no password recieved: car will start then stall...security light will flash then stay on.

2. invaid password or disable password: the engine is disabled for 10min and security light stays on for 10min.

doesn't sound like these 2 conditions are occuring...so back to checking non theft issues ie. spark etc.

new info...step son says car was spuddering before it quit. i have a spare fuel pump and fuel level sending unit, got it for $50. he was bad to run down to 1/8 or less in tank...sounds like he may have baked it. can you tell me about the fuel rail tap, manual says its there, but i dont see one, is it right on the main line across the top?

right side of engine near top rear

this is all from memory so... if you have 3.4l engine....above the intake manifold in the valley between the valve covers look for a silver tubular fuel rail that streches across the intake manifold. there will be 2 rails, 1 for each bank of injectors. On the left (transmission end of the engine) end of the forward rail will be a round pressure regulator with a vacuum hose on the top. on the right end of the rear rail will be a schreder valve with a black plastic screw cap (like your tire valve stem cap). unscrew the cap and screw your pressure gauge there.

quick fuel pump check. this works sometimes. Put gas in first...kidding. have someone crank the engine over while you hammer on the tank with a large mallet. If it starts most likely fuel pump but always check power and grds at tank connector.

keep us posted

replaced fuel pump and she fired right up:runaround: thanks all. next project is to remove passlock by adding resister and bypassing hall effect switch.
