I have two questions that I need help with.

1. I am having problems shifting my transfer case in to neutral, I have already looked in the owners manual for the procedure. I have followed step by step and it will not shift. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?

2. I want to change the lubricant from the transfer case, but have read of many different types of oils to use. Do I have to use GM gear oil or can I use something els?

By the way the truck is a '98 Chevy Tahoe 2dr.

if this is the auto 4wd transfercase ...........

the transfercase uses trac II fluid...this is only at the dealer..

I believe its about almost 2.5qts...this is the ONLY fluid to use period....

if it does not shift in 4wd or neutral it is very possible the encoder motor is defective....get the drive train codes, gm specific code reader, and post back if this is indicating a problem..

do not use too much force on the drain /fill plugs 12 ft lbs with a little thread sealant..the tranfercase fluid should be BLUE>>>>not red /black or gray....

Thanks for the reply.

It does have the automatic 4x4 transfer case. Ok, I will get the gear oil from the dealer.

I took it to a mechanic who scan the truck with the scanner. He checked the 4x4, engine, and ABS. Only got engine code, not relavent with the encoder.

I forgot to post that I can cycle thru 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo. The only thing I can't do is shift it to neutral.

In the 10 years I've owned this 2000 4wd silverado I once checked to see if neutral worked..off hand I forget how the proceedure is completed ...I would suspect you are not doing this correctly...if it does work correctly in the other selections...

replacement of the transfercase fluid with normal usage is around 30,ooomi...this keeps the clutches and encoder operation fast and maintains proper fluid lubrication , even if not in 4wd the transfercase fluid is being damaged and needs replacement..

I bought the truck about a year ago, I don't know when the last fluid change on the transfer case was done. I also don't know what type of abuse the truck was submitted to. I will try to do the procedure again.
