I have a 2002 buick lesabre custom and would like to know where the thermostat is located.

It's where the upper radiator hose meets the motor. Take off the gray beauty cover on the motor by twisting on the oil filler tube. Drain a little coolant from the radiator, two quarts maybe. Then take off two bolts holding the cap that is on the end of the upper radiator hose. Pull hose off to side. Lift up on thermostat to remove it with its rubber seal that it sits inside of.

I notice that the original is offset and the aftermarket is not ,is it better to use the oem or doesn't it matter?

I don't think it makes any difference. My original had a small bleeder hole in the larger side of the offset. I saw one aftermarket that also had the bleeder hole. I used Stant brand, US made, in my cars for replacements. I was careful to try to bleed air past the thermostat as I filled it and ran to warm up. I figure all the air will get worked out eventually.
