Starting Problems

Hi All,
I recently picked up a 77 full size Chevy truck. Its my first running carbureted vehicle.
I noticed that its takes alot of cranking to get it started.
So this morning, I decided to press the gas pedal a few times, with the thought that perhaps it "primes" the fuel pump (not sure if its mechanical or electric). The truck started just fine.
Is this the normal thing to do?
Thanks in advance,

Yes this is normal. By pressing the throttle fully once before cranking you set the choke on the carb.
