Emergency: Car shut off while driving!

My 00' GP SE 3.1L w/ 127600+ km continues to shut off on me while driving whenever I fuel up to a full tank, half or putting gas period it starts to idle real bad i.e. RPM gauge goes from 0-4 repeatedly when I turn the car on. Then when I drive off it will shut off. Im not a expert but Im assume it gotta be the fuel pump since there is excess pressure in the line.

Likewise, while driving on the expressway for about 7 hrs I notice the car will make a noise as if the acceleration is jammed. I tried to give it some more gas but the gauge reads at 70 mph remain until I take my foot off the gas padel and then apply it again!

Like you said, I would check fuel pressure first.

What is the procedure to check the fuel pressure?

Don't forget about the fuel filter too!

Not sure the specifics, but two years ago when my car would stall and idle rough it turned out to be a defective MAF sensor. No SES light or any other indicators.

there is a schrader valve on the fuel rail that you hook a fuel pressure guage to in order to test fuel pressure. Key on/engine off pressure should be 48-55psi and should drop 3-7 psi with the engine started. If you pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator with the car running, fuel pressure shoul spike back up to near key on/engine off spec.

Nope! no SES light or any indicators. But I can say when the car shuts off on me the steering wheel becomes stiff or hard to turn and the check engine light and everything else comes on. Im thinking about taking it to the dealer to check it out

Did you check the TPS? Does the car have problems shifting at all? When you unplug the MAF does the car drive ok? It might be the fuel pump. Try the fuel pump resistor switch trick.

the 3100 and NA 3800 dont have fuel pump resistors :smile:

i wouldnt bring it to the dealer. i would be willing to bet it is a bad fuel pump. it really isnt that hard to change...especially in the 97-03 GP since theres an access door, so you dont need to drop the tank

Thanks for the support. I would probably change the fuel pump since from the looks of it from the underbody the fuel tank has a dent in it. I will try to post a pic of the damage tank over the weekend to provide some aide. Is there any steps or procedure on how to change the fuel pump since you don't have to drop the tank??
