Picked up a wagon

so i picked up a 1986 Caprice Classic Wagon. The car has 50,200 original miles on it and drives good so far. (only had it 1 day) The body has rust issues but the frame is good. (unlike my 84 sedan) The owner, son of original owner, had the frame undercoated where it originated at in Detroit. Here are some pictures of the rust. It's on both sides in spots like you see. Do you think it will be difficult/costly to repair these?

what a score, with that kind of mileage. Good job, and a nice, nice car. Keep the old Caprice for parts :)

you're right, it is an 87. believe it or not, the sedan i got in 07 was in better condition and had on 44,000 original miles. unfortunately due to job loss, relocation, and overall automotive ignorance, it went downhill.

Too bad... that blue Caprice still looks nice. But I have found many '80's GM cars in the same shape. I have passed on a couple of gorgeous early 80's Eldorados for this reason.

The wagon is nice. Just underspray the whiz out of it,once a year, including inside the doors and rocker panels.

I like the third row seats, so you can put the kids in there, facing backwards so they can get motion-sick and throw up. :)

And of course, the headliner is starting to go, as all liners of this type will do. But there are kits to fix this or an auto trim shop can do this. I used contact cement to fix mine. It looks okay, but not like new though.

We love our wagon and use it all the time, especially on long trips.
We can haul more stuff than most suv's and have the ride of a car.

However, they are a bit underpowered for a big car and we have to crawl up some of the hills here in Cali but other than that, they are comfortable cruisers.

A rear sway bar will help the handling quite a bit.

The rust is a bummer, we have had some rust issues to deal with over the years but not as bad as yours. I don't let the rust get to bad before I have it taken care of.

Good luck with your project. :)

thanks. funny you mention the crawling up a hill. when i drove it home i thought it felt a bit sluggish. as for the rust, i hope to have that addressed within a few weeks.
