weird drive train problem

on a 95 jeep cherokee a friend of mine romped on the gas and black smoke started to come out from around the shifter and from under the hood. any ideas? it is a 4 wheel drive jeep, im doing the work for a family member and i need this thing back on the road asap, :screwy:

Have you looked underneath to see where it might have come from? What smell was there to the smoke...exhaust? Burning?

Does it have an exhaust leak?

I can't check it for exhaust leaks right now cuz I gotta get it running first. But this was just word of mouth what the problem is, I havnt had the chance to drive it yet,

Yeah, it's tough to help someone that's just given you a quick description. Smoke can be exhaust or transmission or other things too. Did they give you any other info about what happened?

Ya I know. The only info I got was what I started off this thread with. And apparently there is some kinda clunking also. Can't tell ya where tho

OK; well post back when you have more info. My first thought was exhaust, then some sudden fluid leak.
