Windshield Wiper Problem

I have a 2000 Acura 3.2TL. Lately when I turn on the windshield wipers, the blades seem to over shoot in both directions, making slapping sounds as they hit the edges, especially when turned on high speed. I have not adjusted the arms. In fact I have not done anything to the wipers at all. During the past rainy days here in San Diego, the wiper blade on the driver side became bent causing permanent streaks on the windshield. I looked at my manual and could not find anything that could be the cause except of an adjustment marker. Could it be that something in the mechanism is wore out or got out of adjustment. I hope I don't have to replace the whole mechanism. The drive motor is OK.

You might want to check the nuts that mount the wiper arms, they may have worked loose allowing them to move more than they should (don't over tighten)

I removed the arms and found the grooves in both arms stripped. Fortunately it was the grooves in the arms that were stripped and not the shafts on the driving mechanism. Just the arms will cost me about a hundred bucks each. O well.

Update: I had to have the whole wiper mechanism assembly (worn bushing) replaced plus the two arms with stripped spline.
