22re engine swap

i recently got a 94 4x4 pickup w/a blown engine. it had a replacement engine on the box when i bought it. the guy i bought it from said the replacement engine came from a 4runner (though i'm not sure). I had to swap oil pans and sumps (the oil pan hit on the front rear end when dropping it in) swap flywheel, clutch and pressure plate (the ones on the donor engine are a bit smaller in diameter) now i can't seem to get the engine in place....i'm wondering could the pilot bearings on the 2 engines have different inner diameters? if the donor engine came out of a 2wd, would the spline diameters be different from a 2wd tranny to a 4wd one?

This is a bit of a wild ass guess, but a while back I gave a 22r from a 4WD to a friend to replace the 22R in his 2WD. I remember he had to swap exhaust manifolds and oil pans, but otherwise it was OK. And knowing the way Toyota likes interchangeability, it would not surprise me if the spline count/diameter etc where the same.

Just thought of a simple way to check, just see if the clutch install alignment tool for both is the same.

i don't have a clutch alignment tool right now....i used to have a couple of them for different splines, but can't seem to find them. there is an extra tranny on the box as well though, (w/a mashed up gear)...i could maybe pull the spline from that and use it for an alignment tool. i assumed that an engine from a 4runner would slide right in a pick up, but i also assumed that 4runners were basically pickups w/o boxes. the 2 engines look identical with the same sensors and plug ins....even the manifolds are the same, but had to change the sump& pan (which made me think the donor engine may have been in a 2wd, due to it hitting on the diff housing) and just realized yesterday after a failed attempt to install it, that the flywheel, clutch and plate are all smaller than the ones that came from the truck. after swapping flywheels/clutches, i still can only seem to get the motor to slide on the spline a bit, but not all the way. is there anyone who knows if toyota possibly used more than 1 size pilot bearing in their 22re's, to possibly fit other applications. my dowel pins aren't quite up flush to the tranny yet.....i'm about a 1/4" away.

check with your local auto parts stores... they may help you in this department. they may let you barrow a alignment tool out of a clutch set. But make sure you return the damn thing since its your rep on the line at this point. :)

got it in finally. my problem was a skim of rust on the inside of the bearing race, a burr on the spline (from trying to jam it in w/o the clutch properly lined), and the clutch was a touch off center.
