K&N air filter

I was just wondering if a K&N air filter would be a good choice for my next air filter. I just replaced mine with a normal one, but i've read that K&N filters flow more easily and have a small power gain, but i've also read that they can let in a lot of dirt and dust. Anyone have some feedback? Also, would I notice a slight increase in power? I know it'll sound louder, but just wondering if the slight power increase would be at all noticeable.

If you're talking about just chaning the filter you won't notice any gain, although the K&N probably flows a bit better and cleaner than a stock filter. If you meant changing your entire intake to an aftermarket intake along with a K&N filter than yes, you'll probably notice a slight pickup in power.

Yeah I was talking about the filter, I don't have enough extra cash to get an entire intake system yet. Thanks for the info.

An air filter won't make the car louder. You probably won't have any noticeable gains in power either (though this depends on the car, some react better than others)

its the piping that makes the sound (jus like if u blow across the top of a bottle). the filter itself will help u get MINIMAL gains...but still, it isn't a bad investment at all.

Dont listen to any of these yahoos...

its a easy 8-10hp, I mean thats what they advertise the power gain right?

They wouldnt lie at all... Nope... Lieing is Evil.

So expect a good 8-10hp from the filter.

you may notice a bigger gain if you have a super clogged up filter right now...

As mentioned the gains will be minimal to good depending on the car and more so it's state of tune.

On a smaller N/A engine the gain is small. Very small. On a 5.7 litre V8 it would be more noticable.

On a turbo or super charged car the gains are very good.

Also take into consideration for a moment the complete induction system. While the panel will allow your car to breathe in easier if your restricted at the exhaust side you nullify the gains there. If you have an exorbannanet amount of plumming to the air box and then again to the throttle body that will also restrict air flow.

the only type of filters that really makes sounds is the cone type. the stock air box muffles the induction noise. now if you can ditch the whole air box, and just buy a cone filter adaptor, and just buy a cone filter, you will get that nice intake growl that your lookin for.

Just save up a little bit of money and get a cold air intake! They aren't that expensive. You can find fairly cheap ones. Hit me up a PM and I can probably find you a good price.

Having a K&N open air filter on the 95 and a replacement filter on the 94 I can say without a doubt that the replacement filter doesn't give any perceptable performance increase. It does give me a filter that doesn't have to be replace - basically forever (just has to be cleaned one and awhile). The open air filter did give perceptable performance gains.

You won't notice a gain for your car. Th eonly benefit would be the fact that you would neve have to buy another air filter. You will gain perhaps 5HP at the most.

Ok, thanks for all the info.

Also are cold air intakes useful all year round? or do they have to be disabled or something in the winter? Considering it can get pretty cold here.

LOL!!!

No, they don't. They call them cold air intakes because the get air from the fender instead of the engine bay, or from directly outside.

would it b better to just ditch the filter an put some kind of screen up to avoid sucking up small animals and children?

Now theoretically yes... but me being the Expert on these forums I'll tell you why you shouldnt...

Cause a little screen doesnt add horsepower... a pretty little red foam filter with some oil on it does. And if its not a K&N filter than you're not getting your garuanteed 8-10hp gain. If its a cheap knock off like a J&M... L&O or even the J-Lo. then you're only getting 7-9hp.

I mean, come on.. whatelse is gonna keep you from blowing the welds on your intake man? And you've got an eclipse thats a documented problem with them.

Didnt you see that documentry on street racing a few years back? That was pure racing secrets being told by the pro's. :p

That would be a real quick way to screw over your engine.

Forget that expensive strap-on junk, rip off the whole intake filter and housing and just pull an oil soaked sock over it, you'll get 20 hp, guaranteed!

My best result was to drill a hole in my hood and have custom piping that sticks up out of it. Then at the top of the piping(approximately 9 inches from the hood) you put a K&N cone filter on there. This is called the "chimney effect." It is still a new type of technology, so not many people uses it yet, so be sure to hurry up and get it before all your friends do!!!!! Make sure you tighten the clamp on the cone filter really good, or else it might fly off when you're doing 120 zipping in and out of traffic on the freeway!!! I learned the hard way:( . I never dyno'ed my car, but my butt dyno says I gained at least 15hp... And what's even better is that it's cheaper then on of those AEM cold air intakes.. Good luck!! And don't tell any of your friends what you're doing untilll you complete the frabrication!

Liar, my friend did that and it wasn't neccesary to tighten it in so much, because the engine sucs on it so hard that it holds it in place and the faster it goes the harder it sucks! :silly2:

HELL!!

Who needs a filter anyhow, filters only slow you down!

Well you're right that the engine sucks super hard while under accleration at high speeds.. but what about when you let off? ..... Yea.. uh huh..

what is considered to be a whole intake system? intake unit, pipes, and manifold? or just like the intake unit and the piping that goes to the manifold?
