Wiring

Well i did use the search option but did not get that good of an answer to my Q. First off it is for my el camino drag project, front is lowered, nice big rims, turbo, but there isnt much more im going to be doing to it so i would like to focus on engine detail..I would like to no the basics of wiring, materials, basically a little tutorial if anyone could do that for me, with some pics maybe even ome paint pics i dont care i just need to figure this out.

well both sits arnt really that great, doesnt really help me, being a newbie to wiring, anyone got any pics or anything that they have tried?

What kind of wiring are you looking to do? distrubutor wires?

ya mainly that and any other big wires or hoses that will add more detail

broken electronic stuff when bashed open reveals lots of goodies that can be used for engine detailing :)

i know but i want to know where connections go and such, maybe get a owner's manual or sumin?

wirirng diagrams are hard to come by in the net... i know :) but there are tons of pics of the real thing if you search hard enough. try searching for car shows sites :)

Drill some holes onto the valve covers (4 on each assuming that's a V8). Then put your distributor in that hole on your intake plenum. Connect the wires from the valve covers to the distributor.

First off dont drill holes. buy a pin vise it is for modeling. If you are not sure where hoses and wires go the nlearn how a car works and other stuff at Howstuffworks.com

Just a small correction to what TheSyndicate said. You would need to drill the holes in the Cylinder head, not the valve covers.

And correct me if Im wrong BaNe but arent pin vises for drilling holes with small drill bits?

I've actually seen it done both ways. Wasn't sure which way was correct.

Should be pin vise and purchase drill bits seperately. Normally they sell apart.

You can check out the page midnightracer posted to find out where the spark plug wires go on different engines

spark plug wires only go throught the valve covers on hemis and if its the stock engine in the elcamino you should put the wires in between each tube of the headers on the cylinder head

The publishers of Scale Auto magazine also publish books about auto detailing. You can have more information in their web page.

Also you can look in racing parts catalogs like Summit, and see the real thing.

being a welder all of the pin vises i ever bought came with an assortment of bits in the handle, some vehicle do have plug wires that go through the valve covers but on a small block chevy they go on the side of the head. chaz

Care to share what engines have the spark plug and therefore the wires in the valve cover? I know of only one and thats a hemi.

I would be obliged :flipa: that is a original 1940 ford engine.

although those plug wires arnt technically in the valve cover just the spark plugs :D

I see what you are saying but spark plugs and wired are going into the valve cover. I find it funn 64 chevy hasnt responded

Ah yes the good old ford flat head engine. Too bad those are the cylinder heads of that engine, not the valve covers. See how the plug screws in to the top? If that was a valve cover the reach on the spark plug would have to be several inches long and I dont know of any plug like that.

And you think its funny that I dont get on these boards every few hours to see what new has been written? For me once a day is good enough. Then I have some time to work on my models.

Would the 3.4 liter DOHC in my Grand Prix count as spark plug wires through the valve cover????
