Uncle Phil smoking

Uncle Phil is my 2002 LS V8. About 116k miles.

Whats up Guys,

I parked Uncle Phil in the garage on Friday. When I started it up this Monday morning I got a significant plume of blue smoke from the exhaust. It clears up before the engine idles down to curb idle and stays clear during daily use.

This is the second time I have seen this. The last (and first) time was the Thanksgiving week. I run about 250 miles per week going back and forth to the bar...oops I mean work. :)

No leaks, No misfires, no warning lamps. I use Chevron gas only because they claim that they don't use 10% ethanol.

Generally speaking, oil burning comes from either the rings or the valve stem seals. It could also be caused by blocked oil drain passages.

Since it sounds like the oil burning is just at start up it sounds likely that it would be valve stem seals. Rings would not likely get better when the engine was running. I haven't heard of many others having similar issues with the LS or Jaguar V8s. You could also make sure all 8 spark plugs are installed properly and the issue isn't oil leaking past the spark plugs due to bad spark plug well seals, which is a common issue (bad seals, not loose spark plugs). If any of the plugs were that loose though I would expect you to have a misfire due to low compression on that cylinder.

My 02 is doing this also , when it smokes there is also what i will describe as a clatter from underhood( sort of the sound an air compressor makes). It wont always smoke on startup of when accelerating it seems to happen more on moderate acceleration. I have tried coasting down from highway speed (high vacum) and speeding up but this does not trigger the rattle and smoke. any thoughts the car has about 150k

With the engine running, take the oil fill cap off. Put your hand over it. You should feel a slight steady suction. If you feel puffs of air instead, your rings are shot.
If you don't have excessive blow-by it could still be the rings, or it could be the valve stem seals.

I assume that the pinging you are getting is due to carbon build up from all the oil you are burning.
